Sine Qua Non — A Californian Icon of Great Rhône Varieties

Sine Qua Non is one of the most singular domaines in California. Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in Oak View, Ventura County, it has become legendary for its micro-cuvées of Syrah, Grenache and Rhône varieties, produced in extremely limited quantities and distributed almost exclusively by allocation.

Since its earliest releases, Sine Qua Non has cultivated an identity entirely its own: each wine has its name, visual universe, blend and personality. Manfred Krankl’s cuvées are admired for their intensity, precision of ageing, breadth and ability to combine Californian richness with balance. They now rank among the most sought-after bottles for collectors of great American wines.

The spirit of the domaine

A free, artisanal and deeply personal vision of Californian wine. Sine Qua Non does not seek to reproduce a classical model: each vintage is composed as a unique creation, guided by balance, texture, vineyard expression and an aesthetic in which power always remains carefully controlled.

History: a cult wine adventure

The story of Sine Qua Non began in the mid-1990s, when Manfred Krankl, originally from Austria, and his wife Elaine Krankl produced their first wines in California. A former restaurateur and highly creative personality, Manfred approached wine with rare freedom: technical rigour, intuition, aesthetic sense and a refusal of standardisation.

The first cuvées, particularly those based on Syrah, quickly attracted the attention of wine lovers and critics. Their generous, expressive style, combined with labels conceived as true visual signatures, gave the domaine an immediately recognisable identity.

Over time, Sine Qua Non evolved from a project based on fruit sourced from leading partner vineyards into an estate centred on its own sites. Since the 2020 vintage, the wines have been produced exclusively from domaine vineyards, marking an important step in the complete mastery of fruit quality and cuvée identity.

Vineyards: four estate sites, four expressions

Sine Qua Non now draws on four estate vineyards: Cumulus, Eleven Confessions, The Third Twin and Molly Aïda. These sites offer highly varied exposures, soils and climates, allowing the domaine to build complex blends perfectly adapted to each vintage.

Cumulus, located in Oak View, is closely linked to the heart of the domaine and the Next of Kyn project. Eleven Confessions, in the Sta. Rita Hills, brings freshness, tension and structure through its cooler climate. The Third Twin, near Los Alamos, lies on sandy soils and produces intense, deep and highly personal wines. Molly Aïda, a singular micro-parcel, completes this mosaic with a more confidential expression.

This diversity allows the domaine to craft wines of great compositional richness, yet with genuine clarity. Each cuvée is conceived as a blend of places, grape varieties and textures, with the vintage determining the final balance.

Terroir expression: Central Coast, Ventura County, Sta. Rita Hills, Los Alamos, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, Viognier, ripeness, freshness and depth.

Sine Qua Non signature: micro-cuvées, vintage-specific blends, singular labels, long ageing, natural concentration, great length and allocation-based distribution.

Viticulture: low yields and strict selection

The domaine’s viticulture is based on close observation of each site. Yields are deliberately low, in order to obtain concentrated, perfectly ripe grapes capable of retaining sufficient freshness despite the Californian climate.

Ripeness management is essential: Sine Qua Non seeks fully expressive fruit without excess heaviness. Selection is strict, both in the vineyard and at blending, retaining only the lots able to bring balance, density and aromatic precision.

Grape varieties: California’s Rhône soul

The red wines of Sine Qua Non are mainly based on Syrah and Grenache, complemented depending on the vintage by Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Graciano, Touriga Nacional or other varieties used in precise touches. These blends produce wines that are deep, spicy, generous and highly structured.

The whites are generally led by Roussanne and Viognier, sometimes with Marsanne, Petit Manseng or other varieties depending on the vintage. They offer ample textures, aromas of yellow fruit, white flowers, soft spices and a saline length that balances their natural richness.

Aromatic profile

Reds: blackberry, cassis, black plum, blueberry, violet, black pepper, liquorice, cocoa, smoked meat, graphite, dried herbs and oriental spices.

Whites: apricot, peach, ripe pear, white flowers, fine honey, wax, almond, soft spices, saffron, warm stone and saline length.

Evolution: candied fruits, truffle, fine leather, tobacco, mocha, incense, dried fruits, noble smoke and mineral notes.

General impression: generous and spectacular wines, yet carried by ageing precision and more freshness than their richness might suggest.

Vinification: freedom, blending and tailor-made ageing

Vinification at Sine Qua Non follows a highly free approach, adjusted to each vintage. The blends do not follow a fixed recipe: they are built from the personality of the grapes, parcels and desired balance.

Reds: lot-by-lot vinification, adapted extraction, variable use of whole clusters depending on cuvée and vintage, followed by long ageing in barrel.

Whites: vinification geared towards texture, richness and length, with particular attention paid to final tension.

Ageing: prolonged ageing, often in French oak barrels, with proportions of new oak adapted to the wine, cuvée and vintage.

Philosophy: each wine is conceived as an autonomous creation, without mechanical repetition, with its own balance and singular visual identity.

Wine style

The style of Sine Qua Non is immediately recognisable: velvety textures, impressive concentration, intense fruit, spice, length and contained power. The wines can reach considerable richness, yet the best vintages retain freshness, tension and definition, avoiding heaviness.

These are wines for collecting, gastronomy and contemplation. They can be spectacular in youth, then gain complexity with age, developing notes of leather, truffle, incense, mocha, candied fruit and noble smoke.

Emblematic cuvées

Distenta: the domaine’s contemporary series, produced in red and white depending on the vintage. It replaces the earlier approach of unique names with a continuing series, while preserving the blending freedom that defines Sine Qua Non.

Eleven Confessions: cuvées from the emblematic Sta. Rita Hills vineyard, often deep, structured, intense and marked by significant tension.

The Third Twin: a singular label and vineyard near Los Alamos, producing rare, concentrated and highly sought-after wines with a distinct identity within the Krankl universe.

Next of Kyn: a highly confidential project linked to the Cumulus vineyard, distributed separately and belonging to an extremely coveted micro-production category.

Mr. K: former sweet cuvées produced with Alois Kracher between the late 1990s and the 2006 vintage, now rare and highly sought after.

Ageing and gastronomic pairings

The great cuvées of Sine Qua Non can age for 10 to 20 years, sometimes longer depending on vintage and storage conditions. In youth, they are often marked by remarkable intensity; with time, the tannins integrate and the aromas gain complexity.

At the table, the reds pair beautifully with roast lamb, game, aged beef, duck, gently spiced dishes, smoked meats, porcini mushrooms, truffle and mature cheeses. The whites work well with Bresse poultry, lobster, noble fish, cream sauces, gently spiced cuisine and refined Mediterranean dishes.
