Bodegas Murua – The timeless elegance of Rioja Alavesa

A historic Elciego estate shaped by Masaveu precision

Located in Elciego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Murua embodies the most classical, refined and understated expression of this emblematic region. Owned by Masaveu Bodegas — a benchmark of elegance and precision in Spain — the estate upholds a philosophy rooted in balance, fine tannins and absolute respect for the fruit.

Far removed from modern excesses, Murua focuses on revealing the nobility of Elciego’s limestone–clay soils through harmonious, elongated and meticulously crafted wines. A signature deeply anchored in the history of Rioja Alavesa.

Terroir – Altitude, Atlantic freshness and limestone nobility

The estate’s 80 hectares surround Elciego on ideally oriented slopes between 400 and 550 metres. This territory, dominated by Tempranillo, offers:

  • Highly draining limestone–clay soils – verticality, precision of tannins, definition of grain;
  • Refreshing altitude – essential for aromatic tension and finesse;
  • Atlantic influence – slow ripening, integrated acidity, natural balance;
  • Terraces and rolling hillsides – among the finest landscapes of Rioja Alavesa.

Alongside Tempranillo, Murua also cultivates Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura, each worked with an accuracy perfectly suited to the local identity and the estate’s classical style.

Viticulture – Sustainability, parcel selection and Masaveu precision

Murua’s vineyard management is a model of sobriety and environmental respect:

  • sustainable soil and landscape management,
  • reasoned interventions in the vineyard,
  • promoted biodiversity,
  • mostly manual harvesting,
  • strict selection of the best parcels.

Each lot is vinified separately to preserve its terroir-driven identity. This parcel-based philosophy forms the foundation of Murua’s finesse — and the hallmark of Masaveu precision.

Winemaking & ageing – Aromatic purity with discreet oak

Winemaking is carried out with meticulous precision:

  • fermentations with indigenous yeasts,
  • gentle and controlled macerations,
  • fine extraction to preserve freshness and texture,
  • ageing in French and American oak depending on the style,
  • oak always integrated, never dominant.

The goal is clear: harmony, purity and aromatic restraint. Wines where oak supports without masking, and where fruit remains the guiding thread.

Wine style – finesse, purity, natural balance

Murua wines are defined by:

  • clean, floral and lightly spiced aromatics,
  • precise fruit, free from excess,
  • a silky, harmonious texture,
  • Atlantic freshness typical of Rioja Alavesa,
  • a remarkable balance between ripeness and tension.

These are wines of elegance rather than power, built for both ageing and gastronomy, and showing remarkable consistency from vintage to vintage.
