Delas Frères – The refined expression of the great terroirs of the Northern Rhône
A historic Rhône house reinvented: precision winemaking, parcel-focused excellence and deep roots in Hermitage
The Estate
Founded in 1835 in Tournon-sur-Rhône, Delas Frères represents nearly two centuries of winemaking tradition in the Northern Rhône. Integrated into the Deutz–Roederer group in 1977, the house embarked on a major qualitative renaissance from the late 1990s onward, driven by strategic investments, vineyard expansion and a renewed focus on its historic terroirs, particularly Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage. Today based in Tain-l’Hermitage, Delas Frères stands as one of the leading names in Syrah and Rhône whites, combining classical heritage with contemporary precision.
Terroir & Vineyard
The estate manages around 30 hectares of vineyards, primarily in Hermitage—notably in the famed lieux-dits Les Bessards and L’Ermite—and in Crozes-Hermitage, complemented by long-term partnerships for fruit sourcing. Its vineyard footprint also extends across Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and even Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Soils include granite, clay-limestone, alluvial deposits and river stones, forming a mosaic of high-potential terroirs. Delas Frères vinifies each parcel separately, allowing the most accurate rendition of Syrah, Marsanne and Roussanne.
Philosophy & Style
The philosophy at Delas Frères revolves around three core principles: terroir expression, parcel-by-parcel vinification and refined elegance. Vineyard work increasingly follows environmentally respectful practices, with precise canopy management and a focus on optimal ripeness. Each plot is harvested and vinified individually to safeguard its identity.
In the cellar, vinification is adapted to each appellation: gentle macerations, controlled extraction, and barrel ageing calibrated according to the wine’s profile. The goal is to craft wines marked by expressive fruit, refined tannic structure and clear mineral definition, without allowing oak to overshadow the underlying terroir.
A landmark cellar in Tain-l’Hermitage
The new winery in Tain-l’Hermitage, designed by architect Carl Fredrik Svenstedt, embodies the estate’s modern revival. Its wave-like façade made from local limestone echoes the curves of the Hermitage hill, while the terraced structure integrates a gravity-flow cellar, barrel rooms, tasting lounges, guest suites and reception spaces. Both functional and visually striking, the building symbolizes the balance between tradition, innovation and hospitality.
Wine Style
Delas Frères wines are defined by purity of fruit, saline tension and refined structure. The reds—driven by Syrah—combine notes of black fruit, black pepper, olive and garrigue, supported by polished tannins and controlled freshness. The whites, crafted from Marsanne and Roussanne, offer floral and honeyed aromatics backed by a vivid mineral spine. The range spans from accessible Rhône classics to highly gastronomic cuvées with impressive ageing potential.
