Pauillac · Fifth Grand Cru Classé 1855

Château Batailley — The Timeless Pillar of Pauillac

Nobility, structure, and classic Médoc power in perfect harmony.

A Historic Legacy in the Heart of the Médoc

Set upon the legendary gravel soils of Pauillac, Château Batailley stands among the oldest and most respected estates of the Médoc. Its name recalls a battle fought here during the Hundred Years’ War — an event said to have led to the recapture of nearby Château Latour. Classified as a Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Batailley has, for nearly two centuries, embodied the noble, powerful, and steadfast spirit of great Pauillac.

Owned by the Castéja family (who also own Château Trottevieille), the estate combines tradition and modern precision. The state-of-the-art cellar, renovated in 2014, has further refined parcel-by-parcel vinification and enhanced the precision of the wines.

An Exceptional Terroir

The 50-hectare vineyard lies on deep gravel and clay-gravel soils, ensuring excellent drainage and slow, even ripening — conditions perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape of Pauillac. The vines are cultivated with respect for natural balance, using sustainable practices and meticulous manual harvesting.

  • Surface area: 50 hectares
  • Grape varieties: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc
  • Owners: The Castéja family
  • Annual production: approx. 270,000 bottles

The Signature of a Great Pauillac

Château Batailley is renowned for its classic, structured style, where depth and refinement coexist beautifully. The wines display a firm yet polished tannic backbone and evolve gracefully with age.

  • Nose: ripe cassis, cedar, pencil lead, smoky and floral nuances.
  • Palate: broad, straight, and velvety with noble, persistent tannins.
  • Finish: long, fresh, and subtly graphite-like.

A reliable wine for long ageing, faithful to the character of Pauillac’s great terroirs.

A Style of Balance and Consistency

Each vintage reflects a pursuit of harmony and depth rather than sheer power. The élevage is conducted with precision, preserving the fruit’s nobility while revealing the finely chiseled texture that defines the great wines of the Médoc. Château Batailley thus embodies the serene grandeur of Pauillac — a solid, honest wine of quiet distinction and enduring grace, true to the purest Bordeaux tradition.
