Domaine Pierre Morey — The Quiet Precision of Meursault

Domaine Pierre Morey is one of the most respected names in Meursault and the Côte de Beaune. Discreet, rigorous and deeply attached to terroir precision, the estate produces wines sought after for their purity, mineral tension, restrained ageing and remarkable ability to age.

Heir to a family established in Meursault since the late 18th century, Pierre Morey took over the family domaine in 1971 before becoming one of the leading figures of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy. Today, continuity is ensured with Anne Morey, co-manager of the estate, and the new generation represented by Jean-Victor Morey.

The spirit of the estate

A Burgundy of silence, precision and restraint. Pierre Morey seeks not immediate effect, but exactness: balanced ripeness, sober ageing, biodynamic vineyard work, limestone expression and absolute respect for the identity of each climat.

History: a family rooted in Meursault

The Morey family has been established in Meursault since 1793. Pierre Morey took over the family estate in 1971, after several generations of winegrowers attached to the Côte de Beaune. His path is also linked to two great names of Meursault: Domaine des Comtes Lafon, with which the Morey family has a long history of sharecropping, and Domaine Leflaive, where Pierre Morey played an important role as régisseur.

This experience alongside major estates deeply shaped his vision: precision in vineyard work, respect for the living soil, measured ageing and the search for a pure expression of terroir. In 1992, Pierre and Anne Morey also created Morey-Blanc, a family négociant house allowing them to vinify and age other appellations with the same standards as the domaine wines.

Terroirs: Meursault at the centre, Côte de Beaune in depth

The domaine covers around 10 to 11 hectares depending on the source, mainly around Meursault, with parcels also located in Monthélie, Pommard, Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet. This mosaic allows the estate to offer a precise reading of the great balances of the Côte de Beaune: mineral, taut whites and fresh, delicate, structured reds.

The terroirs of Meursault form the stylistic heart of the domaine. Clay-limestone soils, varied exposures and precise parcel work give rise to Chardonnay wines that are deep, saline and long-lined. The reds, made from Pinot Noir, express a more discreet yet highly refined Burgundy, favouring clear fruit, freshness and texture.

Terroir expression: Meursault, Monthélie, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, clay-limestone soils, salinity, warm stone, tension and depth.

Pierre Morey signature: biodynamics, gentle pressing, restrained ageing, low proportion of new oak, aromatic precision, mineral purity and strong ageing potential.

Organic and biodynamic viticulture

Pierre Morey is one of the pioneers of biodynamics in Burgundy. From 1991, he adopted the principles of organic farming and introduced certain biodynamic practices in the vineyards. The domaine became fully biodynamic in 1997, a major step that has durably shaped the identity of the wines.

This approach is based on soil work, observation of natural cycles, biodynamic preparations and the search for a living balance between vine, soil and climate. The goal is not to impose a style, but to strengthen the readability of terroir and the vitality of the grapes.

Aromatic profile

Whites: ripe lemon, pear, yellow apple, white peach, white flowers, hazelnut, almond, fresh butter, warm stone, chalk and salinity.

Reds: red cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, peony, fine spices, delicate forest floor, fresh earth and fine tannins.

Overall impression: precise, discreet and profound wines, carried by natural freshness, elegant texture and a highly readable mineral expression.

Vinification and ageing: restraint, accuracy and length

Vinification at Domaine Pierre Morey favours precision over demonstration. For the whites, pressing is long and gentle, fermentations take place on fine lees, and the wines are aged in barrel with a measured proportion of new oak. Ageing is generally long, building texture, stability and depth without disguising the terroir.

Whites: gentle pressing, settling, fermentations on fine lees, long ageing in Burgundian barrels and measured use of new oak.

Reds: careful sorting, controlled macerations, gentle extraction and a search for fine, fresh and digestible Pinot Noir.

Ageing: restrained oak, respect for the material and bottling once balance has been reached.

Philosophy: avoid aromatic overload, preserve natural tension and let minerality guide the finish.

Wine style

The whites of Domaine Pierre Morey embody a precise and chiselled vision of Meursault. They do not seek excessive opulence: their strength lies in tension, salinity, mineral depth and the ability to unfold slowly with age.

The reds are often more confidential, yet highly appreciated by connoisseurs. They express Pinot Noir in a delicate, fresh and articulated register, with pure fruit, measured extraction and fine tannins. The whole domaine shares the same aesthetic: restraint, precision, longevity and fidelity to place.

Emblematic cuvées

Whites

Meursault: the central wine of the domaine, broad yet precise, marked by yellow fruits, white flowers, hazelnut, warm stone and a saline finish.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: one of Meursault’s most chiselled expressions, combining tension, purity, intense minerality and great length.

Meursault Les Tessons: a sought-after lieu-dit, more vertical and stony, offering fine concentration without heaviness.

Puligny-Montrachet: a finer and more floral expression of Chardonnay, driven by uprightness, freshness and limestone tension.

Reds

Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots: structured yet refined Pinot Noir, with deep red fruit, elegant tannins and ageing potential.

Volnay 1er Cru Santenots: an elegant and floral cuvée, combining delicate texture, pure fruit and progressive depth.

Monthélie Rouge: a more accessible expression of Pinot Noir, floral, fresh, delicate and immediately appealing.

Morey-Blanc: the family extension

Created in 1992 by Pierre and Anne Morey, Morey-Blanc allows the family to vinify grapes and musts from other great Burgundian terroirs with the same standards as the domaine wines. The Morey-Blanc cuvées therefore complete the Pierre Morey universe, notably on prestigious appellations such as Bâtard-Montrachet or Corton-Charlemagne depending on vintage and sourcing.
