Gould Campbell – A Historic Port House of Noble Structure & Classic Depth

Two centuries of tradition, refined tannic architecture and long-lived Vintage Ports

Founded in 1797, Gould Campbell is one of the historic names that helped shape the great tradition of Vintage Port. Born from the partnership between the Gould family in Portugal and the Campbell family, prominent merchants in London, the house quickly gained renown throughout the 19th century for producing Ports of depth, structure and longevity.

Since 1970, Gould Campbell has been part of Symington Family Estates, owners of several major Douro properties. This integration provided significant technical and viticultural resources while preserving the house’s distinct identity: structured Ports with elegant tannins, remarkable freshness, and an exceptional capacity for ageing.

Terroir & Vineyard – The Steep Heart of the Cima Corgo

Gould Campbell sources its wines from the Cima Corgo, the historic qualitative core of the Douro Valley. Here, vines cling to steep, terraced hillsides carved from dark schist—a fractured, heat-retaining rock that enables slow, even ripening and natural concentration.

The parcels are selected within the Symington group’s finest estates, cultivated with precision to achieve perfect fruit maturity and structural harmony. The house relies on the Douro’s noble indigenous grape varieties — Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão — to compose Ports that are deep, mineral and faithful to the valley’s dramatic schist terroirs.

Philosophy, Winemaking & Ageing – Tradition, Precision & Mastery

Gould Campbell maintains a traditional approach at the core of its identity. Some cuvées are still foot-trodden in stone lagares, an ancestral practice yielding a gentle and harmonious extraction. Fortification is carried out using a high-quality grape spirit to preserve the fruit’s purity and freshness.

Ageing varies according to the style: prolonged maturation in old wooden vats for Ports destined to evolve slowly, or shorter periods before bottling for Vintage Ports, which then continue their long development in bottle.

The philosophy is founded on precision: controlled density, firm yet elegant tannic structure, and a constant balance between power, depth and freshness.

Wine Style – Structure, Depth & Schist-Driven Freshness

Gould Campbell Ports are defined by their solid structure, supported by fine, tightly woven tannins that underpin their impressive ageing potential. The fruit is dark and concentrated—cassis, blackberry, black cherry—enriched with notes of spice, cocoa and warm schist.

On the palate, the wines are dense and ample, lifted by a striking natural freshness, a hallmark of the best Ports from the Cima Corgo. This interplay of power, mineral tension and refinement gives Gould Campbell a classic nobility and a majestic evolution over time.
