W & J Graham’s — The Deep Elegance of Great Douro Ports
W & J Graham’s is one of the most emblematic Port houses and one of the historic great names of the Douro. Founded in 1820 by the Scottish brothers William and John Graham, the house has built its reputation on an immediately recognisable style: deep, generous, velvety Ports with remarkable ageing potential.
Today part of Symington Family Estates, Graham’s retains a very strong identity, combining British heritage, Douro precision, patient ageing in Vila Nova de Gaia and rigorous selection of the finest grapes from its historic quintas. From legendary Vintage Ports to long-aged Tawny Ports, the house embodies a noble, intense and deeply expressive interpretation of Port.
A house of depth, richness and balance. Graham’s seeks Ports that are both concentrated and harmonious, marked by ripe black fruits, velvety texture, spice, structuring freshness and great ageing capacity. Its style combines opulence, precision and lasting elegance.
History: a house founded in 1820
The history of Graham’s began in 1820, when William and John Graham, two Scottish brothers active in the textile trade, accepted barrels of Port as payment for a debt. Impressed by the potential of these Douro wines, they decided to devote themselves to the trade and later to the production of great Ports.
The house developed rapidly and became one of the most respected names in the sector. In 1890, Graham’s took a decisive step with the acquisition of Quinta dos Malvedos, an estate that would become one of the pillars of its style. The same period also confirmed the importance of its historic lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, the central place for the ageing and maturation of its Ports.
In 1970, Graham’s joined the Symington family, one of the most important dynasties in Port. This transition ensured continuity while strengthening the house’s viticultural roots in the Douro. Today, Graham’s remains a global benchmark, especially for its Vintage Ports, long-aged Tawnies and famous Six Grapes Reserve Port.
Terroirs: the Douro and the strength of Quinta dos Malvedos
Graham’s style is rooted in vineyards located in the Douro Valley, one of the most spectacular wine regions in the world. Vines are planted on steep schist slopes, often in terraces, within a continental climate marked by hot summers, cold winters and significant temperature variation.
Quinta dos Malvedos, acquired in 1890, is the historic heart of Graham’s. Located in a privileged sector of the Douro, it produces wines that are rich, structured, intensely fruity and naturally balanced. The parcels of Malvedos, together with the other quintas associated with the house, allow for blends of great depth.
The main traditional Douro grape varieties are used in the blends: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and old mixed vineyards. Each variety brings its own nuance: perfume, structure, colour, freshness, tannins, spice or aromatic depth.
Terroir expression: Douro, schist, terraces, old vines, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, black fruits, spice, cocoa, freshness and power.
Graham’s signature: velvety richness, concentration, controlled sweetness, ripe fruit, polished tannins, ageing structure and balance between opulence and freshness.
Viticulture: quinta selection and fruit maturity
The quality of Graham’s Ports is based on rigorous selection of grapes from its Douro quintas. The house places great importance on phenolic ripeness, natural concentration and the preservation of freshness, which is essential to balance the richness of Port.
Old vines and terraced parcels play an essential role in the complexity of the blends. In this demanding region, viticulture requires precise, often manual work on difficult slopes. Grapes must bring colour, sugar, tannins and aromatic intensity, but also enough acidity to allow the wines to age harmoniously.
Vintage Port: blackberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, violet, liquorice, dark chocolate, pepper, cocoa, soft mint and graphite.
Tawny Port: walnut, hazelnut, almond, dried fig, date, caramel, orange peel, coffee, sweet spices, blond tobacco and noble rancio.
Evolution: candied fruits, cocoa, fine leather, spice, mocha, truffle, dried fruits, precious wood and a long warm finish.
Overall impression: deep, generous and velvety Ports, where fruit richness is carried by fresh structure and precise ageing.
Vinification: extraction, fortification and the art of ageing
Port is born from a particular form of vinification: fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit, a process known as fortification. This preserves part of the grape’s natural sugars and gives the wine its characteristic richness, while fixing its aromatic structure.
Extraction: colour, tannins and intense fruit are sought within a very short fermentation window.
Fortification: fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit, preserving natural sweetness and aromatic power.
Ageing: maturation in Vila Nova de Gaia, in barrels, pipes or larger vessels depending on the desired style.
Philosophy: adapt ageing to the type of Port: fresh fruit and concentration for Vintage, oxidative complexity and polish for Tawny.
Wine style
The style of W & J Graham’s is marked by enveloping richness, intense black fruit, velvety texture and great ageing ability. The Vintage Ports are often deep, opulent and structured, yet always balanced by freshness that allows them to evolve for decades.
The Tawny Ports express the art of oxidative ageing: dried fruits, nuts, caramel, spice, coffee and noble rancio. They offer a more immediately accessible complexity, while the great Vintage Ports require patience and cellar time. Across all styles, Graham’s maintains a signature of controlled sweetness, aromatic depth and great harmony.
Emblematic cuvées
Graham’s Vintage Port: the house’s great age-worthy wine, declared only in outstanding vintages. Deep, structured, rich in black fruit and built to evolve for several decades.
Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Port: a single-quinta expression of the historic estate, produced in years when the classic Vintage may not necessarily be declared, with a dense, fruit-driven and highly distinctive style.
The Stone Terraces Vintage Port: a rare cuvée from specific stone terraces at Quinta dos Malvedos, produced only in certain exceptional vintages, combining concentration, freshness and great elegance.
Six Grapes Reserve Port: one of the house’s emblematic Ports, rich, fruity and generous, often considered an ideal introduction to the Graham’s style.
Late Bottled Vintage: a single-vintage Port aged longer before bottling, offering an intense, supple profile that is accessible earlier than a classic Vintage Port.
Tawny 10, 20, 30 and 40 Years: long-aged Ports marked by dried fruits, nuts, spices, caramel and refined oxidative complexity.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
Graham’s great Vintage Ports have remarkable ageing potential, often lasting several decades in the best vintages. Young, they offer intense fruit power; with age, they develop notes of cocoa, leather, spice, candied fruits, truffle and precious woods.
At the table, Vintage Ports pair beautifully with dark chocolate, black-fruit desserts, blue cheeses, nuts, cigars or contemplative moments. Tawny Ports are superb with dried-fruit desserts, walnut tarts, crème brûlée, mature cheeses, almonds, caramel and spiced pastries. Served slightly chilled, they gain even more balance.
