Château Pontet-Canet — The Biodynamic Energy of Pauillac

Château Pontet-Canet is one of the most distinctive and admired estates in Pauillac. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, it has progressively transcended the limits of its historical ranking to become one of the most sought-after crus in the contemporary Médoc.

Owned by the Tesseron family since 1975, Pontet-Canet owes much of its modern renaissance to Alfred Tesseron, who led the château through a profound transformation: a return to living soils, biodynamic viticulture, horse-ploughing, more natural vinifications and ageing less dominated by oak. This visionary approach has made Pontet-Canet one of the symbols of large-scale biodynamics in the Médoc.

The spirit of the château

A deep, vibrant and sensual Pauillac, where the power of gravel soils meets rare biodynamic energy. Pontet-Canet seeks wines that are intense yet alive, structured yet supple, able to express the depth of Cabernet Sauvignon, the sensuality of Merlot and the mineral tension of the terroir.

Terroir: the deep gravel soils of Pauillac

The vineyard covers around 81 hectares in a single block, located in northern Pauillac, not far from Mouton Rothschild. The vines grow on deep Günzian gravel, combined with clay-limestone subsoils and a carefully mapped mosaic of parcels. This terroir provides drainage, deep rooting and natural regulation of ripeness.

The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The commonly cited proportions are close to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. High planting density, around 9,500 vines per hectare, and an average vine age often around 40 to 45 years, contribute to the wines’ natural concentration and depth.

Terroir expression: Pauillac, deep gravel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, natural drainage, graphite, cassis, cedar, freshness and mineral tension.

Pontet-Canet signature: biodynamics, controlled power, velvety tannins, pure fruit, saline energy, amphora ageing, Médoc depth and outstanding ageing potential.

Biodynamic viticulture: a Médoc revolution

Pontet-Canet is one of the châteaux that profoundly changed the perception of viticulture in Bordeaux. From the mid-2000s, Alfred Tesseron and his team moved the estate towards organic and then biodynamic farming, with certification obtained across the entire vineyard from the 2010 vintage.

Soil work, observation of natural balances, the use of horses in certain parcels, biodynamic preparations and reduced intervention all aim to strengthen vine vitality. This philosophy has given the wines a more vibrant, tactile and free dimension, while preserving the classical structure of Pauillac.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, fresh plum, deep black fruits and ripe red fruits.

Médoc nuances: graphite, pencil lead, cedar, blond tobacco, menthol, violet, liquorice, sweet spices and smoky notes.

Evolution and terroir: truffle, fine leather, noble forest floor, cigar box, fresh earth, salinity, polished tannins and mineral finish.

Overall impression: a powerful, profound and vibrant Pauillac, combining natural density, biodynamic freshness, velvety texture and great length.

Vinification and ageing: fruit purity and textural precision

Vinification is carried out by lot and parcel, with a search for precise extraction without harshness. The château favours gentle movements, gravity whenever possible, and an approach designed to preserve fruit integrity and the finesse of the tannic structure.

Harvest: manual, with rigorous sorting and parcel selection.

Vinification: micro-lots, concrete and stainless-steel vats depending on the lot, measured extractions and macerations adapted to the vintage.

Ageing: a combination of barrels, amphorae and large vessels depending on the year, preserving fruit, freshness and the wine’s mineral dimension.

Philosophy: limit oak dominance, refine texture, preserve terroir energy and accompany the wine without masking its identity.

The use of amphorae, introduced from the 2012 vintage, has become one of the château’s markers. These vessels help reduce the impact of new oak and preserve greater purity, freshness and aromatic transparency.

Wine style

The style of Château Pontet-Canet combines the classical power of Pauillac with a more sensual, enveloping and vibrant texture than many traditional Médoc crus. The wines offer dense substance, chiselled tannins, saline freshness and an almost tactile energy.

In great vintages, Pontet-Canet can age for several decades, developing notes of cedar, truffle, graphite, tobacco, fine leather and forest floor while retaining remarkable fruit intensity. This alliance between age-worthy structure and biodynamic vibration explains its status as a “Super Fifth” among many enthusiasts.

Emblematic cuvées

Château Pontet-Canet: the estate’s Grand Vin, a Pauillac Fifth Growth. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, with deep fruit, graphite, cedar, menthol, velvety tannins and a long, saline and vibrant finish.

Les Hauts de Pontet: the château’s second wine, more accessible in youth, retaining the elegance, freshness and purity of the Pontet-Canet style in a softer and more immediate expression.

Benchmark vintages

The 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages are among the most sought-after years of the modern era, depending on tasting profile and cellaring preferences.

The greatest vintages can age for 25 to 40 years, sometimes more, thanks to the combination of dense fruit, preserved acidity, solid tannic structure and increasingly precise ageing.
