Domaine Arlaud — Purity, Precision and Elegance in Morey-Saint-Denis

Located in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, on the prestigious Côte de Nuits, Domaine Arlaud embodies a contemporary vision of Burgundy built on fruit purity, precise vinification and deep respect for the living world. Founded in 1942 by Joseph Arlaud and Renée Amiot, the domaine has gradually established itself as one of the most luminous references in Morey-Saint-Denis.

Developed by successive generations, notably Hervé Arlaud, the domaine is now led by Cyprien Arlaud, with the family involved both in the vineyards and in the cellar. The estate has distinguished itself through a demanding conversion to organic and then biodynamic farming, resulting in wines of great finesse, focused more on transparency and energy than on extraction.

The spirit of the estate

A precise and vibrant biodynamic Burgundy, where each climat is treated as an individual identity. Domaine Arlaud seeks fine, expressive and digestible wines, carried by silky tannins, natural freshness and a clear reading of the terroirs of Morey, Chambolle and Gevrey.

Terroir: Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin

The domaine covers around 15 hectares, spread across 19 appellations, mainly between Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. This mosaic of climats offers a complete reading of the Côte de Nuits, from regional Burgundy wines to the most sought-after Grand Crus.

Clay-limestone soils, varied exposures and vine age give rise to Pinot Noir wines that are at once structured, floral and mineral. Morey brings depth and energy, Chambolle delicacy and perfume, Gevrey tension and structure.

Terroir expression: Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, clay-limestone soils, Pinot Noir, red fruits, flowers, fine spices, salinity and mineral tension.

Arlaud signature: biodynamics, horse-ploughing, gentle vinification, measured extraction, pure fruit, satiny texture, freshness and transparency of the climats.

Organic and biodynamic viticulture

As early as 1998, the domaine stopped using herbicides before converting all of its 15 hectares to organic farming in 2004. Organic certification was obtained in 2010, followed by biodynamic certification from the 2014 vintage. This trajectory makes Arlaud one of the pioneering domaines in Morey-Saint-Denis for this demanding approach.

The soils are worked with great care, sometimes by horse in order to limit compaction and preserve microbial life. Biodynamic preparations, reasoned grass cover, manual harvesting and meticulous sorting make it possible to obtain healthy, balanced grapes with remarkable aromatic precision.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: red cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, redcurrant, delicate blackberry and fresh black fruits.

Flowers and spices: peony, violet, rose, fine pepper, light liquorice, sweet spices and delicate floral notes.

Evolution and terroir: noble forest floor, fresh earth, graphite, wet stone, silky tannins and saline finish.

Overall impression: pure, luminous and vibrant Pinot Noir wines, combining tactile finesse, mineral energy, freshness and great fruit precision.

Gentle vinification and parcel precision

Harvesting is entirely manual, and the grapes are carefully sorted. Vinification is designed to preserve fruit delicacy and the personality of each climat: few punch-downs, gentle extraction, measured sulphur use and a search for natural balance.

Harvest: 100% manual, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and cellar.

Vinification: parcel-by-parcel approach, gravity-fed work, natural fermentations and very measured extraction.

Whole clusters: proportion adjusted according to cuvée, vintage and stem ripeness.

Ageing: around 16 to 18 months, with measured use of new oak to preserve aromatic purity.

Bottling: red wines are generally unfiltered, preserving texture, energy and natural depth.

Wine style

The wines of Domaine Arlaud stand out for their aromatic purity, satiny texture and very natural balance. The style avoids over-extraction, favouring finesse, fruit precision, freshness and a delicate tactile sensation.

The village and Premier Cru cuvées are often approachable through their bright fruit and fine tannins, while the Grand Crus — Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares — offer more depth, structure and ageing potential without losing the elegance that defines the domaine.

Emblematic cuvées and climats

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots: a structured, floral and profound cuvée with fine length.

A luminous signature of the Côte de Nuits

Domaine Arlaud has become one of the contemporary references of the Côte de Nuits thanks to a clear vision: to produce living, precise and elegant wines without artifice or excess. Biodynamics here is not a decorative claim, but a way of strengthening the coherence between soil, vine and wine.

Under the impetus of Cyprien Arlaud, the domaine has gained in finesse, brightness and transparency. Its wines seduce through their accuracy, silky texture and ability to express the diversity of the great climats of Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin.
