Château Pichon Baron — Great Pauillac of structure, depth and elegance

Château Pichon Longueville Baron, often known as Pichon Baron, is one of Pauillac’s essential references. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it belongs to the historic elite of the Médoc, with an identity deeply shaped by Cabernet Sauvignon, Pauillac gravel soils and an exceptional ability to age.

Since its acquisition by AXA Millésimes in 1987, the estate has undergone an ambitious modernisation of its facilities and a constant pursuit of precision. Under the direction of Christian Seely, Pichon Baron has affirmed a style that is powerful, finely chiselled and highly controlled, true to the spirit of classic great Pauillac.

A historic Pauillac terroir

The estate is rooted in a vast vineyard of deep gravel soils on the Left Bank of the Gironde, north of Bordeaux. These poor, well-draining, stony soils encourage deep rooting and slow ripening, ideal for revealing the structure, freshness and noble aromatic profile of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The most qualitative part of the vineyard, around the Butte de Pichon Baron, is reserved for the Grand Vin. This historic core gives rise to a dense, precise and very long Pauillac, combining power, mineral tension and refined tannic structure.

Viticulture and parcel selection

The vineyard is managed with meticulous parcel-by-parcel precision. Each plot is followed according to its age, grape variety, position and ripeness. Manual harvesting, rigorous sorting and careful lot selection ensure that only the grapes most faithful to the level expected of a great Pauillac are retained.

This search for precision continues in the cellar, where vinification by individual lots allows extraction and ageing to be adjusted to the personality of each origin. The aim is not to produce a showy wine, but a deep, built, balanced wine capable of ageing for several decades.

Wine style

Château Pichon Baron is defined by a distinctly Pauillac signature: blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, cedar, blond tobacco, fine spices and pencil-lead notes. The palate is structured, ample and precise, carried by firm yet polished tannins, great freshness and a long, deep and distinguished finish.

In great vintages, the Grand Vin can evolve for several decades, gaining complexity, aromatic nobility and textural refinement. It stands among Pauillac’s most reliable and age-worthy Bordeaux wines.
