Domaine Coche-Dury — The Timeless Excellence of Meursault

Domaine Coche-Dury is one of the most legendary estates in Meursault and an absolute benchmark for great white Burgundy. Sought after worldwide, it embodies a rare aesthetic: extreme precision, mineral tension, textural depth, perfectly integrated ageing and exceptional cellaring potential.

The domaine owes its modern renown to Jean-François Coche-Dury, a major figure of the Côte de Beaune, who elevated the family wines to the summit of Burgundy from the 1970s onward. Today, Raphaël Coche continues this legacy with the same commitment to precision, discretion and fidelity to terroir.

The spirit of the estate

A Burgundy of precision, patience and restraint. Coche-Dury does not seek opulence or immediate effect: the domaine favours precise ripeness, long pressings, meticulous ageing, noble reduction, limestone tension and a unique ability to reveal the energy of Meursault.

History: a family legend of Meursault

The origins of the domaine date back to the 1920s, with Léon Coche, who gradually acquired parcels around Meursault. His son Georges Coche later developed the family vineyard holdings, before Jean-François Coche took over the estate in 1973.

The name Coche-Dury comes from the association between Jean-François Coche and his wife, Odile Dury. Under Jean-François’s direction, the domaine gained worldwide renown for white wines of rare mineral intensity, built on precision rather than demonstration.

Present at the domaine since the late 1990s, Raphaël Coche gradually took over and has ensured stylistic continuity since Jean-François stepped back around 2010. This transmission follows a logic of fidelity: restrained gestures, long ageing, perfectly ripe fruit and a constant search for tension.

Terroirs: Meursault at the heart, Côte de Beaune in precision

The domaine farms a mosaic of small parcels, generally estimated at around 9 to 10.5 hectares depending on the source. The vines are mainly located around Meursault, but also in Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Volnay and Pommard.

The domaine’s great white wines come from now legendary terroirs: Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières, Meursault 1er Cru Les Caillerets, Meursault Les Rougeots, Meursault Les Chevalières and Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères. Each cuvée expresses a different nuance of limestone, slope, exposure and texture.

The domaine’s red wines, more confidential, come notably from Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Volnay and regional cuvées. They reveal another facet of the house: fine Pinot Noir, precise fruit, gentle extraction and supple texture.

Terroir expression: Meursault, Corton-Charlemagne, Les Perrières, Les Caillerets, Les Rougeots, Les Chevalières, Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, limestone, tension, gunflint and salinity.

Coche-Dury signature: long pressings, precise ageing, noble reduction, integrated oak, chiselled minerality, great natural concentration and exceptional longevity.

Viticulture: old vines, low yields and manual precision

The domaine works its vines with extreme attention: ploughing, yield control, rigorous selection of plant material, careful observation of ripeness and manual harvesting. Old vines play a central role in the natural density of the wines, especially on the great terroirs of Meursault.

The philosophy remains pragmatic and artisanal, often described as careful and reasoned viticulture. The goal is not to display a label, but to produce perfectly balanced grapes capable of yielding wines that are intense, taut and deeply legible.

Aromatic profile

Whites: ripe lemon, pear, yellow apple, white peach, toasted hazelnut, almond, fresh butter, gunflint, chalk, noble smoke and salinity.

Evolution: fine honey, dried fruits, wax, white truffle, sweet spices, warm stone, toasted notes and great mineral persistence.

Reds: red cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, peony, fine spices, fresh earth and delicate tannins.

Overall impression: wines of rare precision, combining concentration, tension, limestone energy, noble reduction and saline length.

Vinification: patience, precision and perfectly integrated ageing

White-wine vinification is based on long, gentle pressings, slow fermentations and precise ageing in Burgundian barrels. The proportion of new oak remains measured, supporting the material without dominating the wine. Ageing may extend over a long period depending on the cuvée, often around 15 to 24 months.

Whites: gentle pressing, long fermentations, barrel ageing, controlled reduction and emphasis on mineral tension.

Reds: gentle vinification, generally destemmed, seeking pure fruit, fine tannins and supple texture.

Bottling: highly precise work before bottling, with a constant concern for preserving purity and energy.

Philosophy: build depth through time, precision and integration, never through aromatic overload.

Wine style

The white wines of Domaine Coche-Dury are famous for their balance between natural richness and sharp tension. They offer an immediately recognisable signature: toasted notes, gunflint, noble reduction, perfectly held ripe fruit, great depth and a saline finish.

With age, the great cuvées gain complexity without losing their energy. The reds, more confidential, express a delicate and precise Pinot Noir, favouring finesse, drinkability, clear fruit and soft texture. The entire domaine shares one aesthetic: intensity, restraint, purity and longevity.

Emblematic cuvées

Whites

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: the domaine’s mythical cuvée, of rare breadth, combining power, energy, minerality and very long ageing potential.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: a crystalline and vertical expression of Meursault, marked by saline tension, finesse and exceptional length.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Caillerets: a straight, stony and precise wine, combining mineral brightness, depth and length.

Meursault Les Rougeots: a village wine of very high level, deep, nervy and often considered one of the domaine’s most sought-after signatures.

Meursault Les Chevalières: a precise, upright and taut cuvée, more slender, carried by limestone purity.

Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères: a floral, stony and long expression from a prestigious village located next to great white-wine terroirs.

Reds

Auxey-Duresses Rouge: supple, precise and savoury Pinot Noir, marked by red fruits and great drinkability.

Monthélie Rouge: a fine, juicy red with sweet spices, a fresh frame and delicate expression.

Volnay 1er Cru: a cuvée of elegance, often from a blend of premiers crus, with chiselled tannins, pure fruit and refined length.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir: a clear and precise regional expression, faithful to the spirit of the domaine in a more accessible register.

An absolute rarity of the Côte de Beaune

The rarity of Coche-Dury is due to the small size of the domaine, its extremely high standards and worldwide demand. Certain cuvées, such as Corton-Charlemagne or Meursault Perrières, are produced in tiny quantities and rank among the most sought-after bottles in Burgundy.

Yet the greatness of the domaine is not limited to its most prestigious cuvées. Even the regional or village appellations express precision, tension and density that reflect the Coche-Dury identity. This consistency, from Bourgogne Chardonnay to Corton-Charlemagne, is what sustains the legend of the estate.
