Château d’Issan — A Refined Classic at the Heart of the Gravel Soils

Located in Margaux, Château d’Issan is a Grand Cru Classé 1855 whose history dates back to the 12th century, and has been held by the Cruse family since 1945. Under the current management of Xavier and Caroline Cruse, the estate masterfully balances Bordeaux tradition, heritage, and modern vision. It stands as a glowing emblem of elegance and timeless finesse.

Terroir & Grape Varieties: Harmony of Gravel and Elegance

The vineyard spans approximately 54 hectares, planted on gravelly rises resting on a limestone subsoil, with a south-southwestern exposure ideal for the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend is typically composed of ~60% Cabernet Sauvignon, ~30% Merlot, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. High planting density and an average vine age of ~30 years reinforce concentration and finesse.

Viticulture & Philosophy: Precision and Sustainability

  • Sustainable viticulture with partial cover crops and integrated farming.
  • Manual harvesting and rigorous sorting parcel by parcel.
  • Dedicated research on soil diversity, water management, and reduced intervention, maintaining Margaux’s signature refinement.

Winemaking & Aging: Finesse with Structure

  • Parcel-based vinification in stainless steel or wooden vats, with gentle pump-overs and moderate maceration.
  • Partial malolactic fermentation in new oak barrels.
  • Aging for 16 to 18 months in French oak, with ~50% new barrels, uniting fruit, structure, finesse, and longevity.

Signature Wines

  • Château d’Issan — the grand vin: cassis, cedar, violet, gentle spice. Silky texture, polished tannins, with a refined saline finish.
  • Dame de d’Issan — second wine: fruit-forward, fresh, true to the estate’s identity.
  • Château d’Issan Blanc — rare white cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc & Sémillon: lively minerality, elegant and composed.
