Château Branaire-Ducru – The Precise Elegance of a Classic Grand Cru

A Fourth Growth Classified Cru renowned for its balance, purity, and refinement — a timeless expression of the Saint-Julien style.

A legacy of finesse and precision

Classified as a Fourth Growth in 1855, Château Branaire-Ducru embodies the quintessential Saint-Julien profile: balance, aromatic clarity, and understated elegance. Its origins date back to the 17th century, but it was in the 19th century, under Gustave Ducru, that the estate took its current name and established its reputation as a Médoc benchmark. Since 1988, the Maroteaux family has restored the estate’s brilliance. Today, under the leadership of François-Xavier Maroteaux, the château pursues a demanding path, combining sustainable viticulture, technical precision, and a constant quest for harmony.

A homogeneous, gravelly terroir

The vineyard spans 60 hectares in a single block, planted on the famous Garonne gravel mounds of Saint-Julien, over a clay-sandy subsoil. These warm, well-drained soils provide ideal conditions for the slow ripening of Cabernet grapes, ensuring wines of precision, depth, and vibrancy.

Winemaking — Tradition meets precision

A pioneer in gentle modernization, Branaire-Ducru was among the first Médoc estates to adopt a gravity-flow cellar, preserving the integrity of the grapes. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with meticulous parcel-by-parcel management, followed by 16 to 20 months of ageing in French oak barrels (60–70% new). This approach enhances fruit purity, tannin finesse, and terroir transparency.
