Weingut Pöckl – Contemporary Excellence in the Great Reds of Burgenland

Power, precision and modern craftsmanship on the eastern shores of the Neusiedlersee

Founded in 1910 in Mönchhof, on the eastern shore of the Neusiedlersee, Weingut Pöckl has become one of Burgenland’s leading names. A benchmark family estate, its reputation was built under Josef and René Pöckl, who elevated the domaine to a reference point for Austria’s most ambitious red wines.

Driven by a modern and unapologetically powerful vision of red wine, Pöckl embodies one of the region’s most distinctive styles: intense, structured, precise wines built for long aging and sought after by collectors.

Terroir & Vineyard

The estate covers around 30 hectares surrounding Mönchhof, planted on warm, well-drained soils typical of Burgenland:

  • sands and silts,
  • loess,
  • iron-rich gravel and mineral deposits.

Combined with the sunny, warm microclimate of the Neusiedlersee — one of Austria’s hottest regions — this mosaic ensures optimal ripeness and remarkable natural concentration for red varieties.

An exclusively red-wine estate

A notable particularity: the domaine is fully dedicated to red grapes, including:

  • Zweigelt
  • Blaufränkisch
  • Sankt Laurent
  • Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc
  • Merlot
  • Syrah
  • Pinot Noir

Vineyard work follows a sustainable, reasoned approach, with meticulous soil management and deliberately low yields to ensure purity and concentration.

Philosophy & Vineyard Practices

The estate’s guiding vision is unwavering: craft red wines of international stature while remaining faithful to the identity of Burgenland.

  • traditional Doppelstock training system for small, concentrated berries,
  • sustainable viticulture focused on soil life,
  • 100% manual harvesting,
  • rigorous selection of only the most concentrated fruit.

This demanding and coherent approach produces wines that combine power, precision and balance.

Vinification & Aging

Winemaking is designed to achieve controlled intensity and clear aromatic definition:

  • spontaneous fermentations in open vats,
  • long macerations for refined tannin extraction,
  • limited use of sulphur,
  • extended aging in barriques, with a high proportion of new oak for flagship cuvées.

Iconic labels typically spend around 18 months in new barrels, gaining depth, volume and significant aging potential.

The resulting style represents a modern interpretation of Austrian red wine: sculpted richness, noble tannins and impressive length.

Wine Style

Pöckl wines are defined by:

  • deep aromatic intensity (black fruits, spices, cocoa, smoky notes),
  • dense, velvety textures,
  • power balanced by a precise structural spine,
  • dark, brilliant colour,
  • remarkable longevity.

These are ambitious, generous wines — ideal for gastronomy and lovers of structured, powerful reds.
