Cave des Bernunes — Sierre (Valais)

Calcareous terroirs, precise élevage, luminous identity

Located in Chippis, above the town of Sierre, Cave des Bernunes is a family estate founded in 1987 and carried forward with remarkable continuity for more than three decades. The construction of a modern cellar in 1994, followed by an expansion in 2013 — including barrel cellars, a viticultural workshop, and a reception space — marked a decisive evolution in its history.

Today, a close-knit team of five to six people shares a single vision: to express the truth of Valais terroirs through precise, luminous wines deeply rooted in the culture of Sierre.

Terroirs & Philosophy — A High-Altitude Vineyard on Calcareous Soils

The estate’s parcels lie on the calcareous, stony soils of the Sierre valley, one of the sunniest and driest regions in Switzerland. This geology imparts a saline, straight, and tense profile to the wines — especially visible in the native white varieties.

  • calcareous soils and stony moraines,
  • optimal exposure to the Valais sun,
  • dry climate, steady winds, intense luminosity,
  • even ripening with preserved freshness.

This environment offers an ideal platform for both historical Valais grapes and modern interpretations of characterful red wines.

Viticulture & Winemaking — Responsible Work and Patient Craft

The estate relies on rigorous, environmentally respectful viticulture:

  • soil work with horses where slopes allow,
  • controlled grass cover,
  • moderate yields,
  • manual harvesting,
  • meticulous berry selection.

Winemaking, tailored to each grape variety, emphasizes:

  • controlled fermentations,
  • stainless-steel or concrete vats depending on profile,
  • barrel ageing for terroir-driven cuvées (Pinot, Syrah, Cornalin),
  • subtle élevage with no excess oak,
  • a constant pursuit of clarity, tension, and drinkability.

The style favours purity, site expression, and freshness.

Wine Style — Purity, Tension and Calcareous Precision

  • crystalline aromatic purity,
  • natural tension,
  • distinct calcareous minerality,
  • precise, luminous fruit,
  • elegant texture without heaviness,
  • harmonious balance and varietal transparency.
