Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos – The singular depth of Burgos’ Ribera del Duero

An artisanal estate dedicated to old vines and parcel-based expression

Located in Fuentelcésped, in the heart of the province of Burgos, Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos is one of those discreet yet essential estates that embody the soul of the Ribera del Duero. Officially founded in 1996, though rooted in an older family tradition, the winery has distinguished itself through its rigorous parcel-based approach, its preservation of old Tempranillo vines and a constant pursuit of purity.

Under the guidance of Juan Manuel Burgos, the estate produces wines that are deeply rooted, demanding, structured and luminous — wines that faithfully express the natural concentration of the great terroirs of Burgos.

Terroir – The mineral energy of Burgos

The estate spans roughly 30 hectares across several emblematic villages — Fuentelcésped, Santa Cruz de la Salceda, Fuentespina… The soils form a mosaic characteristic of the Ribera:

  • Clay-limestone – structure, tension, verticality;
  • Sands and silts – aromatic purity;
  • Poor, well-drained soils – natural concentration;
  • High altitude (800–900 m) – slow ripening, freshness, precision.

This extreme continental climate — hot days, very cold nights — produces Tempranillos of great aromatic intensity, vibrant and precise, marked by a structuring acidity, tight yet noble tannins and a depth born of slow ripening. The estate integrates this potential through a respectful approach to soils and biodiversity, along with meticulous selection of its oldest parcels.

Winemaking – Tradition, precision, purity

The winemaking philosophy revolves around finesse and the purest expression of Tempranillo:

  • entirely manual harvesting,
  • intra-parcel selection,
  • old vines (60–80 years) for the top cuvées,
  • fermentations aimed at freshness and tension,
  • judicious, never ostentatious, use of oak,
  • parcel-specific ageing focused on balance.

The estate aims for controlled density, Castilian tension, a dark, refined aromatic profile, precise tannins and a solid ageing potential.

Wine style

Wines from Juan Manuel Burgos are characterised by:

  • pure, firm black fruit (blackberry, cassis, black cherry),
  • a vertical, racy structure,
  • chalky minerality from limestone soils,
  • integrated, unobtrusive oak,
  • natural depth typical of Burgos’ high-altitude vineyards.

Serious, terroir-driven wines, crafted for gastronomy and long ageing.

Signature wines

  • AVAN Cepas Centenarias
    Old Tempranillo vines (60–80 years). Controlled power, depth, tight texture, mineral finish. A serious wine for ageing.
  • AVAN Viñedos Viejos
    A vibrant and structured expression of old vines. More immediate than Cepas Centenarias, yet remarkably refined.
  • AVAN Terruño de Valdehernando
    Single-parcel wine. Purity, tension, verticality — a crystalline reading of its terroir.
  • AVAN Tinto
    Introductory cuvée: clean fruit, precision, balance. An ideal gateway into the estate’s style.

Conclusion

Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos embodies the most authentic face of the Ribera del Duero: old vines, limestone slopes, slow ripening and wines that are deep, serious and long-lined. An estate for lovers of purity, structure and terroir — and one of the most compelling signatures of Burgos for those seeking intensity, classicism and identity.
