Castello di Fonterutoli – The Pinnacle of Chianti Classico Since 1435

A historic Mazzei estate crafting mineral, precise and deeply expressive Tuscan wines

Located near Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico denomination, Castello di Fonterutoli stands as one of Tuscany’s most iconic estates. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, it embodies more than twenty-four generations of viticultural heritage shaped by precision, terroir expression and sustainable innovation.

Philosophy & leadership

Today, Francesco and Filippo Mazzei lead the estate, supported by the new generation. Their mission is clear: to preserve the identity of Fonterutoli’s terroirs while integrating cutting-edge oenological research. Sustainable architecture, parcel-based viticulture and meticulous selection practices form the foundation of the estate’s pursuit of purity, finesse and the long-term expression of Sangiovese.

Terroir & vineyards

The property covers nearly 650 hectares, with about 110 hectares of vineyards divided into 114 parcels and 7 micro-terroirs located between 220 and 570 meters above sea level. The predominance of alberese limestone gives the wines a distinctive mineral signature, often described as the “wine of stones”. This intricate mosaic of elevations, soils and exposures allows Fonterutoli to craft precise, vibrant and structured Chianti Classico wines.

Winemaking & gravity-fed cellar

The modern winery at Castello di Fonterutoli is built across three levels and operates entirely by gravity flow, enabling gentle vinification with no mechanical pumping. Each parcel is individually vinified in conical stainless-steel tanks, ensuring a faithful expression of its specific terroir. Ageing takes place in more than 3,000 barriques, in naturally regulated temperature and humidity, refining tannins while preserving aromatic purity without excessive oak influence.

Signature wines

Wine style

These wines represent some of the most refined expressions of Chianti Classico and modern Tuscany.
