Maison Tardieu-Laurent — Haute couture for the great terroirs of the Rhône

Based in Lourmarin, in Provence, Maison Tardieu-Laurent is one of the major references of the Rhône Valley. Founded by Michel Tardieu, the house has built its reputation on a singular model of micro-négociant-éleveur: selecting outstanding fruit or wines from trusted growers, then revealing their potential through precise, demanding élevage.

Today, Bastien Tardieu continues this family vision with the same focus on old vines, historic sectors and the identity of each appellation. From the northern to the southern Rhône, Tardieu-Laurent seeks rare raw material, often from very old parcels, to produce wines of character, depth and clear origin.

The spirit of the house

Tardieu-Laurent represents an artisanal, parcel-focused approach to Rhône négociant winemaking. The house does not seek volume, but source precision, old-vine depth and an ambitious reading of each appellation, producing wines of structure, clarity and long ageing potential.

History: a micro-négociant turned Rhône benchmark

Michel Tardieu was not originally destined to become one of the Rhône’s recognised names. Driven by a passion for wine, terroir and encounters with growers, he spent years exploring vineyards before creating Tardieu-Laurent in the 1990s, with the ambition of building a house based on selection, élevage and a deep understanding of place.

The model has remained deliberately focused: working with trusted partners, favouring old vines and following each wine with the care of a domaine. This philosophy has made Tardieu-Laurent one of the most respected micro-négociants in the Rhône.

Terroirs: from northern to southern Rhône

Tardieu-Laurent explores a wide range of Rhône appellations, from Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Joseph to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Rasteau and Côtes-du-Rhône. The selections favour old vines, often located in the historic heart of the appellations, on soils capable of giving concentration, freshness and depth.

Expression of place: Rhône Valley, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, old vines, granite, rolled pebbles, clay, limestone and sandy soils.

Tardieu-Laurent signature: deep, structured and precise cuvées shaped by source selection, careful élevage and the identity of each appellation.

Winemaking and élevage: selection, patience and precision

Maison Tardieu-Laurent works closely with partner growers, from vineyard follow-up to harvest. The wines are then raised with careful attention to the balance between substance, freshness and site expression. Élevage, often in barrels or larger vessels depending on the cuvée, is used to refine texture, support depth and preserve the readability of each terroir.

Style of the wines

Tardieu-Laurent wines combine intensity, structure and aromatic precision. The northern Rhône reds show deep Syrah, violet, pepper, graphite, dark fruit and fine smoke; the southern Rhône wines express ripe Grenache, spice, garrigue and red and black fruit, with a generous yet controlled texture. The whites combine breadth, freshness and fine bitters on the finish.

Emblematic cuvées

Côte-Rôtie: a noble expression of northern Rhône Syrah, floral, spicy, deep and built for cellaring.

Hermitage: a wine of great structure, dark, mineral and long-lasting.

Cornas Vieilles Vignes: a dense, wild wine shaped by the granitic power of the appellation.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes: a great southern Rhône red, rich, spicy and deep, sourced from very old parcels.

Côtes-du-Rhône Guy Louis: an emblematic cuvée of the house, generous, refined and often outstanding for its appellation level.

Cellaring and food pairings

The finest Tardieu-Laurent cuvées can age for 10 to 25 years, depending on appellation and vintage. They pair well with roast lamb, grilled beef, duck, game, Provençal stews, herb-led dishes, mushrooms, truffle, mature cheeses and characterful Mediterranean cuisine.
