Dominus Estate — Bordeaux Poise, Californian Soul
In Yountville, at the heart of Napa Valley, Dominus Estate unites Bordeaux tradition with Californian power. The vision of Christian Moueix (long associated with Pétrus), Dominus is crafted for elegance, structure and longevity—a quiet statement against showy New-World styles.
A Franco-Californian Story
In 1982, Christian Moueix took the helm of Napanook, one of Napa’s historic vineyards (first planted in 1838). In 1995, he became sole owner and officially named the estate Dominus—“the master”—paying homage to the role of the vigneron.
Terroir
42 ha on deep, well-drained gravel with stones and loam. Marked diurnal shifts, strict dry farming (no irrigation), low yields and no herbicides foster slow, even ripening—key to finesse and intensity.
Winemaking
Hand harvesting with parcel selection and rigorous sorting. Native fermentations, tank by tank, gentle extraction and measured pump-overs. About 18 months of ageing in French oak barrels, ~40% new, then bottling without fining or filtration to preserve fruit and vintage identity.
Style
Tense and deep, with firm yet silky tannins and notes of graphite, tobacco, and wild blackberry. A wine that speaks softly but ages majestically.
