Château Lynch-Moussas is a Fifth Growth classified estate of Pauillac in the 1855 classification. It should not be confused with Château Lynch-Bages: Lynch-Moussas has its own history, vineyard and clearly distinct identity within the Pauillac appellation.
Owned by the Castéja family, the estate has undergone a gradual revival through significant work in both vineyard restructuring and technical facilities. Today, Lynch-Moussas embodies a classical, structured and accessible Pauillac, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot.
A Pauillac of structure, cassis and classicism, where Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone, graphite notes and ageing capacity, while Merlot softens the texture and rounds the palate. Lynch-Moussas appeals through its balance between Bordeaux seriousness, freshness and gastronomic character.
The name Lynch-Moussas belongs to the long history of the Médoc and to the Lynch family, present in Bordeaux for several centuries. In 1855, the château was recognised as a Fifth Growth, a mark of the quality of its terroir and the reputation of its wines.
After a more discreet period, the estate was revived by the Castéja family, who undertook major work to restore the vineyard’s value. This modernisation has allowed the château gradually to regain its place among Pauillac classified growths offering an interesting balance between prestige, typicity and accessibility.
Lynch-Moussas does not aim to imitate the First Growths or its more media-visible neighbours. Its strength lies in a classical, solid and regular expression of Pauillac, with wines that gain harmony after a few years in the cellar.
The Lynch-Moussas vineyard lies on gravel soils typical of Pauillac. These gravel rises favour drainage, water regulation and the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, the central grape variety in the estate’s identity.
Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its structure, firm tannins, cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Merlot, used as a complement, contributes roundness, fruit and suppleness on the palate. The blend aims for balance between Médoc power and elegance.
Lynch-Moussas wines clearly express their Pauillac origin: dark colour, tannic structure, black fruit, noble oak notes, a smoky touch and firm finish. With age, they gain complexity, suppleness and tertiary nuances.
Terroir expression: Pauillac, gravel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, structured tannins and ageing potential.
Lynch-Moussas signature: classical, straight, serious, fruit-driven and structured Pauillac, with fine evolution after a few years in the cellar.
The estate has benefited from significant vineyard restructuring. The goal has been to strengthen parcel coherence, improve grape ripeness and produce wines that are more regular, precise and better suited to current expectations among lovers of classical Bordeaux.
Vineyard management focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon ripeness, an exacting variety that requires good drainage, favourable exposure and precise yield control. This attention allows the estate to produce Pauillac wines that are both structured and more approachable in youth than in the past.
Youth: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, cedar, graphite, sweet spices and blond tobacco.
Evolution: fine leather, forest floor, cigar, liquorice, black truffle, precious woods, smoky notes and candied black fruits.
Texture: structured palate, straight tannins, precise black fruit, Médoc balance and firm finish.
Overall impression: a classical, serious and age-worthy Pauillac, driven more by structure and freshness than opulence.
Lynch-Moussas vinification remains faithful to the spirit of Pauillac: measured extraction, respect for the natural structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and ageing designed to refine tannins. The modernisation of facilities has improved precision, aromatic definition and consistency.
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, complemented by Merlot depending on the vintage.
Extraction: search for structure without excessive hardness, with more polished tannins than in the past.
Ageing: refinement in barrels to bring cedar, spice, structure and complexity.
Philosophy: produce a readable, classical and consistent Pauillac, capable of ageing without losing freshness.
The Lynch-Moussas style is that of a frank, structured and classical Pauillac. The wine generally shows a dark colour, a nose of cassis, black fruit, graphite and cedar, followed by a straight, tannic and balanced palate. It can be enjoyed after a few years in the cellar, but the best vintages clearly benefit from patience.
This is not a Pauillac of immediate demonstration. It is aimed at lovers of traditional Bordeaux, structured tannins, Médoc freshness and bottle evolution. With time, it gains suppleness, tertiary notes and harmony.
Château Lynch-Moussas: the grand vin of the estate, a classical Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Pauillac, structured, fruit-driven, cedar-scented and built for ageing.
Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas: the château’s second wine, more approachable in youth, preserving the Médoc style of the property with greater suppleness.
Château Lynch-Moussas can evolve for 10 to 25 years depending on the vintage. Young bottles benefit from decanting, while older vintages develop aromas of cedar, tobacco, leather, forest floor and truffle.
At the table, it pairs beautifully with rib of beef, entrecôte, roast lamb, game, duck, slow-cooked dishes, mushrooms, black truffle, mature cheeses and classical Bordeaux cuisine. Its tannic structure makes it particularly suited to red meats and dishes with rich jus.
