Château Ducru-Beaucaillou — The Profound Nobility of Saint-Julien
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the great names of Saint-Julien and the Médoc. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the estate embodies one of Bordeaux’s most accomplished forms of balance: contained power, noble texture, aromatic depth and remarkable ageing capacity.
Led by the Borie family, with Bruno-Eugène Borie at the head of the property since the early 2000s, Ducru-Beaucaillou combines the heritage of the great Médoc crus with a contemporary and parcel-based approach to the vineyard. The estate produces wines of great textural precision, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, where density is always held in check by the natural elegance of Saint-Julien.
A Saint-Julien of great presence, built on the nobility of Cabernet Sauvignon, the depth of gravel soils and a constant search for balance. Ducru-Beaucaillou is not defined by power alone: its wines seduce through their tannic grain, length, aromatic brightness and that sense of refinement which distinguishes the finest crus of the appellation.
History: the “beaux cailloux” of Saint-Julien
The name Ducru-Beaucaillou refers to the famous gravel stones that shape its terroir: the “beaux cailloux” that provide drainage, light reflection and regular ripening. Since the 19th century, the château has ranked among the major properties of Saint-Julien, admired for the finesse of its style and the consistency of its finest vintages.
The Borie family has deeply shaped the modern history of the estate. Under the leadership of Bruno-Eugène Borie, the property has reinforced its level of excellence, with increased attention to parcel selection, ripeness, ageing and the precision of the final blends.
This evolution has allowed Ducru-Beaucaillou to preserve its classical dimension while gaining definition. The wine remains true to Saint-Julien: structured, deep, but rarely massive, with an elegance of texture that fully asserts itself after several years in the cellar.
Terroir: deep gravels, the estuary and Médoc balance
The vineyard of Ducru-Beaucaillou covers around 75 hectares in the heart of Saint-Julien, on deep gravel ridges close to the Gironde estuary. These well-draining soils, combined in certain areas with sand, clay and marl, encourage deep rooting and slow ripening, particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vineyard is based mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot. Cabernet brings the wine its backbone: cassis, graphite, cedar, violet, spice and age-worthy tannins. Merlot adds flesh, a more enveloping texture and a rounder fruit nuance.
The proximity of the estuary plays an essential role in the balance of the wines. It moderates climatic excesses, encourages steady ripening and contributes to that rare alliance between density, freshness on the palate and an elongated finish.
Expression of place: Saint-Julien, deep gravel soils, Gironde estuary, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, cassis, violet, graphite, cedar, blond tobacco and silky tannins.
Ducru-Beaucaillou signature: a deep, luminous, structured and refined Bordeaux, capable of long ageing while preserving great elegance of texture.
Viticulture and vinification: selection, precision and controlled ageing
The estate works with a demanding parcel-based approach, attentive to soil balance, grape ripeness and the quality of selection. Harvesting is carried out with rigorous sorting, in order to retain only the lots capable of entering the grand vin or the château’s other cuvées.
In the cellar, vinification by individual lots respects the nuances of each parcel. Ageing in French oak barrels supports the natural structure of the wine, refines the tannic grain and brings additional complexity without masking the identity of the terroir. The aim remains constant: depth, clarity and harmony.
Wine style
The grand vin of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou stands out for its velvety texture, noble structure and great length. In youth, it expresses cassis, blackberry, violet, graphite, cedar, blond tobacco and fine spices. With age, it evolves toward nuances of fine leather, cigar box, forest floor, discreet truffle and melted black fruits.
La Croix de Ducru-Beaucaillou offers a more accessible reading of the house style, with greater suppleness in the first years. Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou gives a more immediate, fresh and charming expression, while preserving the spirit of Saint-Julien.
Emblematic cuvées
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou: the estate’s grand vin, a deep, distinguished and long-lasting Saint-Julien, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and built for long ageing.
La Croix de Ducru-Beaucaillou: the château’s second wine, made from a selection of parcels and lots, more accessible in youth while retaining the rigour and elegance of the estate.
Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou: the estate’s third wine, sincere, fruit-driven and immediately pleasing, offering a fine introduction to the Ducru-Beaucaillou universe.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
Great vintages of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou can evolve for 20 to 40 years in good conditions, sometimes longer in exceptional years. Their tannic structure, balance and aromatic depth make them true cellar wines.
At the table, the grand vin pairs beautifully with rack of lamb, rib of beef, game, duck, veal with morels, truffle-based dishes, mushrooms, Bordeaux sauces and mature cheeses. La Croix de Ducru-Beaucaillou and Le Petit Ducru work well with grilled meats, roast poultry, elegant bistro cuisine and slow-cooked dishes.
