Domaine de Montille – Noble Heritage & The Future of Burgundy

Tradition, biodynamic precision and classic elegance at the heart of the Côte d’Or

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine de Montille entered a new era in the 1950s under the leadership of Hubert de Montille, a visionary jurist and one of Burgundy’s most respected figures. Rejecting technological wines and overt oak influence, he defined a house style that is pure, precise and timeless, now considered a benchmark for classical Burgundy.

Today, his son Étienne de Montille leads the domaine, extending its vineyard holdings, converting it fully to biodynamics, and elevating the technical precision of the cellar. The result: wines of great longevity, remarkable energy, and deep fidelity to their climats.

Vineyards & Climats — A Prestigious Mosaic from Côte de Beaune to Côte de Nuits

The domaine spans approximately 35 hectares across Burgundy’s most celebrated appellations, including:

  • Volnay & Pommard — the historic core of the estate, producing refined, high-elevation Pinot Noirs;
  • Meursault & Puligny-Montrachet — exceptional Chardonnays with precision and saline tension;
  • Vosne-Romanée & Nuits-Saint-Georges — deep, structured expressions of the Côte de Nuits;
  • Corton — powerful, noble hillside reds;
  • Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru — produced in minute quantities, a pinnacle of white Burgundy.

The entire property has been certified organic since 2012 and is farmed following biodynamic principles, enhancing the purity, transparency and mineral precision of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Winemaking Philosophy — Precision, Tension, Balance

Domaine de Montille’s approach is rooted in low-intervention winemaking, aiming for purity and energy rather than power:

  • extensive use of whole-cluster fermentation in reds, adding lift, freshness and aromatic complexity;
  • minimal SO₂ use, carefully calibrated to preserve precision and vibrancy;
  • little to no filtration, retaining textural depth and authenticity;
  • for whites, limited bâtonnage, favoring tension and salinity;
  • subtle, restrained oak influence, always subordinate to the terroir.

The goal is clear: to express the true identity of each climat through wines of purity, finesse and long aging potential.

Wine Style — Restrained Intensity & Natural Grace

The house style embodies a modern classicism that appeals equally to purists and seasoned collectors:

  • Pinot Noirs that are straight, fine-boned and sometimes austere in youth, yet possess remarkable internal energy;
  • a noble, structured tannic frame balanced by vibrant acidity;
  • Chardonnays with crystalline purity, saline definition and exceptional aging capacity;
  • precise aromas: fresh red fruit, florals and delicate spice for the reds; citrus, white flowers, warm stone and light smoke for the whites;
  • serious cellaring potential across all Premier and Grand Cru sites.
