Château Haut-Bailly – The Art of Bordeaux Classicism
A truly singular estate — combining understated depth with absolute refinement. On the prestigious soils of Pessac-Léognan, Château Haut-Bailly has embodied a rare expression of Bordeaux elegance for more than a century. Classified as a Graves Grand Cru Classé in 1953, the estate stands among the most respected names on the Left Bank.
A Visionary Leadership
Since 1998, the estate has been led with precision and sensitivity by Véronique Sanders, heir to a long family legacy tied to Haut-Bailly, alongside Gabriel Vialard, its talented technical director. Together, they continue the legacy initiated by Robert G. Wilmers, a true patron and wine lover, whose family still owns the estate today.
An Exceptional Vineyard
The vineyard covers 30 hectares in a single block on a gravelly croup at the heart of Léognan. Its southeast exposure and geological diversity — gravel, sand, clay, and limestone subsoils — give the wines their distinctive structure and remarkable precision.
One legendary site is the “Parcelle Centenaire”, planted in 1890, a living heritage unlike any other in Bordeaux.
- Vineyard area in production: 28 ha
- Grape varieties: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot
Viticulture & Winemaking
- Manual harvests, parcel by parcel — and even intra-parcel
- Optical sorting and gravity-fed vinification in the state-of-the-art cellar (Daniel Romeo, 2021)
- Fermentation in thermo-regulated wooden or stainless-steel truncated vats
- Ageing 16–18 months in French oak barrels (50–60% new)
- Meticulous parcel-by-parcel monitoring to preserve the natural finesse of the fruit
Style & Signature
Château Haut-Bailly epitomizes pure and refined classicism:
- Velvety texture, noble tannins, fine-grained structure
- Subtle aromatics: ripe black fruits, graphite, dried violet, sweet spices, and a delicate smoky touch
- Balance of density and lightness, offering serene depth over demonstrative power
| Serving temperature | 17–18 °C |
| Cellaring potential | 20 to 40 years depending on the vintage |
The Wines of the Estate
Château Haut-Bailly
The Grand Vin and signature of the estate. Refined, vibrant, and perfectly structured, it is one of the purest expressions of Pessac-Léognan. A great wine built to age for decades.
Haut-Bailly II
Produced from young vines and historic parcels, this second wine combines balance and early accessibility while maintaining the noble style of the estate.
A Philosophy of Precision and Discretion
At Haut-Bailly, every gesture is measured, every intervention deliberate:
- Respect for natural balance
- Preservation of biodiversity
- No unnecessary inputs
- Semi-underground architecture in harmony with the landscape
The estate deliberately stands apart from fleeting trends — here, the wine speaks softly, but with undeniable authority.
