Château de Saint Cosme — A Historic Estate at the Heart of Gigondas
Located in Gigondas, in the southern Rhône Valley, Château de Saint Cosme has belonged to the Barruol family since 1570. Today, Louis Barruol carries on a centuries-old legacy, crafting wines that express the soul of Grenache and Syrah with precision and authenticity.
Terroir & Grapes: Geological Diversity and Precision
The estate covers around 40 hectares, mostly in Gigondas, complemented by single-vineyard selections in Cornas, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Côtes-du-Rhône.
The soils are varied: limestone, marl and sand in Gigondas, granite in Cornas, gneiss in Saint-Joseph. The main grape varieties are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Viticulture & Philosophy: Precision and Respect for Nature
The vineyard is farmed organically (certified in 2020), favoring biodiversity and moderate yields. The grapes are hand-picked, with rigorous sorting and whole-cluster fermentation to preserve purity and energy.
Vinification & Ageing: Purity and Identity
Vinification is parcel-based: the reds ferment in concrete or wooden vats with gentle pump-overs, followed by 12 to 18 months of ageing in barrels, demi-muids and foudres. The aim is to preserve the saline backbone and the freshness typical of Rhône terroirs.
