Domaine de l’Église is one of the historic properties of Pomerol. Its name reflects its proximity to the church of Saint-Jean, at the heart of the village, in one of the most sought-after sectors of the appellation. Mentioned as early as the 18th century, the estate embodies a classical and discreet expression of the Pomerol plateau.
Owned by the Castéja family, within the Borie-Manoux group, Domaine de l’Église now benefits from rigorous technical guidance and a precise approach to vineyard management. Very largely dominated by Merlot, complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, the wine favours elegance, texture and depth rather than demonstrative power.
A Pomerol of distinction, shaped by the suppleness of Merlot, the depth of clay soils and a restrained reading of terroir. Domaine de l’Église seeks balance between black fruit, silky tannins, floral notes, truffle nuances and a persistent finish, in a classical, precise style that opens beautifully with time.
Domaine de l’Église is among the long-established estates of Pomerol. Its location at the heart of the appellation, close to the church from which it takes its name, is central to its historical identity. The estate has passed through the decades while preserving the image of a serious, consistent wine faithful to the traditional style of Pomerol.
Its acquisition by the Castéja family in the 1970s marked an important stage in its development. Since then, the vineyard has benefited from in-depth work, with particular attention paid to fruit quality, precision in vinification and consistency across vintages.
Domaine de l’Église does not seek to impress through exuberance. Its strength lies in a measured, carefully made and deeply Pomerol expression, capable of appealing to lovers of classical Merlot, fine tannins and harmonious evolution.
The vineyard covers around 7 hectares on the Pomerol plateau, within an environment of fine clay terroirs. The soils, marked by deep fine clays, offer Merlot particularly favourable conditions to develop flesh, roundness, aromatic depth and a velvety texture.
The planting is very largely dominated by Merlot, generally around 95%, completed by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. The latter brings a floral nuance, added freshness and a slight tension that balances the natural richness of Merlot.
The vines, whose average age often exceeds forty years, produce grapes that are both concentrated and balanced. This vine maturity contributes to the depth of the wine, the finesse of its tannins and its ability to develop more complex notes after a few years in the cellar.
Terroir expression: Pomerol, clay plateau, Merlot dominant, Cabernet Franc as a complement, black fruits, violet, truffle, supple tannins and silky texture.
Domaine de l’Église signature: classical, refined, straight and deep Pomerol, without excess, with harmonious evolution over ten to fifteen years depending on the vintage.
The estate follows an attentive viticulture, with soil work, controlled yields and hand harvesting designed to preserve fruit quality. The aim is to obtain grapes that are ripe, healthy and balanced, without pushing maturity toward an overly sun-driven expression.
This approach preserves the finesse of Pomerol Merlot: ripe black fruit, polished tannins, a supple yet structured palate, and enough freshness to support ageing. Domaine de l’Église thus belongs to a measured and elegant tradition of Pomerol.
Youth: black cherry, ripe plum, blackberry, violet, liquorice, discreet cocoa, sweet spices and finely integrated oak.
Evolution: black truffle, fine leather, forest floor, blond tobacco, mocha, candied black fruits and lightly smoky notes.
Texture: silky, rounded yet well-held palate, with melted tannins, fine depth and a persistent finish.
Overall impression: an elegant and classical Pomerol, driven more by harmony, texture and evolution than by immediate power.
Vinification is carried out with precision, respecting both fruit and terroir identity. Macerations aim to extract enough structure without hardening the wine or masking the natural finesse of Merlot.
Harvest: manual picking and attentive grape selection according to vintage ripeness.
Vinification: temperature-controlled vats, measured extractions and a search for clean fruit.
Ageing: around 18 months in barrel, with a generally measured proportion of new oak in order to preserve balance.
Philosophy: reveal the nobility of Pomerol Merlot without overloading the wine, favouring precision, texture and consistency.
Domaine de l’Église produces a Pomerol of pure, classical and harmonious style. The wine combines ripe black fruit, a velvety palate, supple tannins and a finish marked by persistence rather than extraction. Ageing brings structure and spicy nuances without dominating the expression of the terroir.
After a few years in bottle, the wine gains complexity and develops notes of truffle, forest floor, fine leather and tobacco. It is generally appreciated at medium maturity, around 10 to 15 years, depending on vintage quality and storage conditions.
Domaine de l’Église: the main wine of the estate, from the Pomerol plateau. Dominated by Merlot, it combines roundness, black fruit, floral notes, silky texture and an elegant finish, with a classical and refined profile.
Production: around 30,000 bottles depending on the vintage, making it a relatively confidential cuvée within Pomerol.
Domaine de l’Église can be enjoyed after a few years in the cellar, once the tannins begin to soften and the fruit gains complexity. The best vintages can evolve for a decade or more, developing a more truffled and tertiary expression.
At the table, it pairs well with beef fillet, roast veal, duck, lamb, poultry with mushrooms, slow-cooked dishes, truffle risotto, mature cheeses and classical Bordeaux cuisine. Its supple texture and elegant profile make it especially enjoyable with refined dishes rather than overly powerful preparations.
