On the Isle of Skye, Talisker stands as one of Scotland’s most distinctive maritime single malts. Founded in 1830 in Carbost, the distillery produces powerful, saline, smoky and peppery whiskies, deeply shaped by wild coastal landscapes, sea spray and the mineral character of the island.

Talisker — The maritime, peppery single malt of the Isle of Skye

Founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, Talisker is the historic distillery of the Isle of Skye. Located in Carbost, on the shores of Loch Harport, it produces an instantly recognisable single malt shaped by sea, peat, salt and its famous peppery finish.

Now part of Diageo, Talisker remains one of the great references of island Scotch whisky. Its style offers a distinctive alternative to the heavily peated malts of Islay: less massive, but intensely coastal, spicy, mineral and vibrant, with aromas that evoke cliffs, sea spray and peat smoke.

The spirit of the distillery

Talisker embodies the raw yet elegant force of Skye: a whisky of sea, smoke and spice, carried by warm texture, clear salinity and an almost volcanic energy. Its signature is direct, expressive and deeply insular.

History: the historic voice of Skye

Talisker’s story began in the 19th century, when the MacAskill brothers founded the distillery in Carbost, on a remote site in western Skye. For almost two centuries, Talisker has remained closely associated with this dramatic island, shaped by wind, tides and rugged landscapes.

Despite changes of ownership and technical evolution, the distillery has preserved a powerful and immediately identifiable style. Talisker 10 Year Old, long included among the Classic Malts, remains one of the most famous introductions to Scotland’s island whiskies.

Terroir and distillation: Skye, sea spray and island character

Set beside Loch Harport, Talisker draws much of its identity from Skye’s rugged environment: humid climate, proximity to the sea, rocky landscapes and saline air. Distillation produces a powerful, oily and spicy spirit, while peat remains present without overwhelming the fruit or maritime dimension of the whisky.

Expression of place: Isle of Skye, Carbost, Loch Harport, sea, peat, salt, pepper, smoke, malt, wet rock and sea spray.

Talisker signature: maritime, smoky and spicy single malts combining salinity, malt warmth, a peppery finish and island depth.

Maturation: smoke, spice and coastal balance

Talisker whiskies are generally matured in oak casks that preserve the strength of the distillate while developing notes of malt, caramel, dried fruit, spice and smoke. Depending on the expression, the style may be more maritime, more peated, softer or more concentrated, yet the saline and peppery thread remains the house’s defining line.

Style of the whiskies

Talisker is defined by a smoky, saline, spicy and lightly oily profile. Aromas evoke peat smoke, sea spray, black pepper, toasted malt, honey, citrus, dried fruit, seaweed, leather and mineral notes. On the palate, the balance between heat, salt, smoke and spice gives a robust yet highly readable expression.

Emblematic expressions

Talisker 10 Year Old: the distillery’s classic expression, maritime, peppery, smoky and fully representative of Skye’s style.

Talisker 18 Year Old: a more integrated and complex version, combining gentle smoke, dried fruit, spice and saline length.

Talisker Distillers Edition: a rounder, deeper expression, often marked by a sweet wine cask finish.

Talisker 25 Year Old and rare editions: collectible whiskies, broader, more evolved and sought after for their maritime depth.

Cellaring and food pairings

Great Talisker bottles can be kept for many years, away from light and temperature variation. They are best enjoyed neat, or with oysters, smoked salmon, grilled fish, mature cheeses, dark chocolate, smoked meats, spicy cuisine and iodine-led dishes.
