Maison Joseph Drouhin — The Timeless Elegance of Burgundy

Founded in Beaune in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s great family-owned houses. For more than 140 years, it has embodied a vision of wine based on finesse, precision and respect for terroir. From Chablis to the Côte de Nuits, from the Côte de Beaune to the Côte Chalonnaise, its name is associated with an elegant and deeply Burgundian interpretation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Today, the house is run by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family — Frédéric, Philippe, Laurent and Véronique Drouhin — while the fifth generation is gradually becoming involved in the family adventure. This rare continuity preserves an immediately recognisable style: precise, balanced, luminous wines always marked by a strong sense of place.

The spirit of the house

A historic, visionary family house where elegance takes precedence over demonstration. Joseph Drouhin seeks wines of purity, freshness and transparency, capable of expressing each climat with accuracy, from regional cuvées to Burgundy’s greatest crus.

History: from Beaune to Burgundy’s great terroirs

Joseph Drouhin founded his négociant house in Beaune at the age of 22. His son Maurice Drouhin later developed the family domaine by acquiring vineyards, notably the mythical Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches, which became one of the house’s emblematic cuvées. Later, Robert Drouhin gave the house its modern and international dimension while strengthening its Burgundian vineyard heritage.

This history continues today with a dual identity: a great Burgundian house rooted in Beaune, and a pioneering family capable of creating a bridge between Burgundy and Oregon. In 1987, the family founded Domaine Drouhin Oregon in the Dundee Hills; in 2013, it acquired Roserock Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, confirming its belief in the potential of the great terroirs of the Willamette Valley.

Terroirs: a rare presence across Burgundy

Maison Joseph Drouhin manages around 100 hectares of vines in Burgundy, with an exceptional presence across the region’s major sectors: Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais. Few houses possess such diversity of climats, soils and exposures.

This mosaic allows Drouhin to produce a very complete range, from regional appellations to the most prestigious Premier Crus and Grand Crus. Yet the house maintains a consistent stylistic line: never mask the terroir, favour balance, aromatic elegance and precision over demonstrative power.

Terroir expression: Beaune, Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, limestone, marl, clay, freshness, salinity and aromatic finesse.

Drouhin signature: elegance, purity, balance, precise vinification, organic and biodynamic viticulture, transparency of the climats and great consistency.

Organic and biodynamic viticulture

Maison Joseph Drouhin is among the major Burgundian houses most committed to viticulture that respects the living world. Across its estate of around 100 hectares, it has practised organic methods since the late 1980s and has developed biodynamic practices since the 1990s.

This philosophy rests on a clear principle: to bring natural responses to the balance of the vine and soil. Soil work, controlled yields, manual harvesting, observation of each parcel and respect for biodiversity help produce grapes capable of finely expressing the identity of their climat.

Aromatic profile

Pinot Noir: red cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, peony, rose, fine spices, noble forest floor and silky tannins.

Chardonnay: lemon, pear, fresh apple, white flowers, almond, fine hazelnut, chalk, wet stone and saline freshness.

Evolution and terroir: discreet truffle notes, fine honey, candied citrus, fresh earth, sweet spices and limestone minerality.

Overall impression: elegant, precise and balanced wines, favouring transparency, freshness and finesse over power.

Vinification: precision, gentleness and respect for the climat

Each cuvée is vinified with the aim of preserving the personality of its origin. Grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted and worked with precision. Extractions are gentle for the reds in order to preserve Pinot Noir finesse, while the whites are aged to maintain tension, purity and complexity.

Harvest: manual, with rigorous selection according to ripeness and grape health.

Reds: gentle macerations and extractions, seeking fine tannins, pure fruit and natural balance.

Whites: precise vinification, ageing adapted to each terroir, preserved mineral tension and freshness.

Philosophy: accompany the wine without constraining it, so that each climat retains its own voice.

Emblematic cuvées, climats and estates

Burgundy

Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc: a historic cuvée of the house, a broad, precise and luminous Chardonnay combining richness, tension and great ageing capacity.

Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge: an elegant, floral and profound Pinot Noir, revealing the nobility of this emblematic Beaune climat.

Musigny Grand Cru: a rare and prestigious cuvée of exceptional aromatic finesse, combining depth, perfume and an airy texture.

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru: a more structured and intense wine, marked by depth, black fruits and great ageing potential.

Échézeaux Grand Cru: a refined and spicy expression, with noble texture and fine persistence.

Corton Grand Cru and Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: two major expressions of the Corton hill, one in Pinot Noir, the other in Chardonnay, combining power, minerality and length.

Oregon

Domaine Drouhin Oregon: founded in 1987 in the Dundee Hills, it produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay inspired by Burgundian tradition, with a distinct Willamette Valley identity.

Roserock Vineyard: acquired in 2013 in the Eola-Amity Hills, this estate completes the family’s American adventure with fresh, floral, mineral and deeply elegant wines.

Wine style

The Joseph Drouhin style rests on one strong idea: elegance before power. The reds are distinguished by fine tannins, delicate perfume and a balance between fruit, freshness and depth. The whites favour purity, mineral brightness and a tension that gives them length and ageing potential.

From regional appellations to Grand Crus, the house maintains a consistent signature: precision, aromatic finesse and respect for the climat. This consistency makes Joseph Drouhin one of Burgundy’s great global ambassadors, present in many international markets while retaining a deeply family-owned identity.
