Château La Gaffelière – Premier Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion

Limestone Excellence Elevated by the von Neipperg Family

Located south of the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, at the foot of the limestone slope, Château La Gaffelière belongs to the highly selective circle of Premier Grands Crus Classés. Its identity lies in the alliance between an exceptional limestone terroir and the vision of the von Neipperg family, owners since 1998.

Under the leadership of Alban de von Neipperg, with the support of his brother Willem-Johan and winemaker Marion Ruppli, the estate has become one of the most refined wines of Saint-Émilion. Their philosophy is clear: to honor the singularity of the limestone and clay-limestone soils by producing wines of precision, purity, verticality and long-lasting elegance.

Terroir & Vineyard

The vineyard spans just over 30 hectares, divided into two complementary terroirs:

  • Limestone and clay-limestone slopes – the estate’s backbone, bringing tension, mineral lift, aromatic purity and remarkable length.
  • Gravel terraces – structure, depth, density and controlled warmth.

The grape varieties reflect a perfect balance between volume, finesse and verticality:

  • Merlot (65–70%) – tactile charm, roundness, flesh.
  • Cabernet Franc (20–30%) – floral lift, energy, precision of tannins.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (5–10%) – backbone, clarity, structure.

Together, these components produce wines of natural elegance, driven by a distinctive limestone signature rare even within Saint-Émilion.

Viticulture – Organic Precision

Certified organic, La Gaffelière practices highly precise parcel-by-parcel viticulture:

  • tailored soil work for each parcel,
  • reasoned cover crops to manage vigor,
  • fine intra-parcel selection,
  • 100% manual harvests,
  • multiple sorting steps, berry by berry.

The aim is always the same: perfectly healthy fruit, picked at optimal ripeness, to preserve purity and balance — the two pillars of La Gaffelière’s style.

Vinification & Aging – Finesse, Balance & Detail

Vinification is conducted in small temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, parcel by parcel:

  • long yet gentle macerations,
  • moderate extractions to retain tannin finesse,
  • carefully managed fermentations to preserve freshness and tension.

The wine is aged for 16 to 18 months in:

  • French oak barrels, about 50% new,
  • complemented by second-use barrels and some large formats for balance and harmony.

The result is a wine of flesh, clarity, salinity, and precision, always without heaviness.

Wine Style

Château La Gaffelière wines are distinguished by:

  • floral aromatics (violet, peony),
  • luminous black fruit,
  • silky, precise tannins, never over-extracted,
  • limestone-driven minerality that elongates the palate,
  • a long, saline, vibrant finish typical of great plateau terroirs.

A style built on contained depth, balance and long-term aging potential.
