Château Haut-Brion — First Growth of Pessac-Léognan

Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most historic estates and one of the five First Growths classified in 1855. Located in Pessac-Léognan, at the heart of the Graves, it embodies a singular expression of great Bordeaux wine: profound, smoky, elegant, mineral and immediately recognisable.

Founded in the sixteenth century, Haut-Brion is often regarded as the oldest of Bordeaux’s great growths in its modern form. Its identity is built on deep gravel soils, an exceptional history, constant viticultural precision and a distinctive style, less Médoc-like in structure, yet equally noble, long-lived and complex.

The spirit of the estate

Château Haut-Brion expresses Pessac-Léognan in a profound, refined and mysterious form. The estate combines the nobility of gravel soils, the maturity of Merlot, the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and a unique aromatic signature marked by blond tobacco, graphite, noble smoke, spices and persistent mineral freshness.

History and identity of Château Haut-Brion

The history of Château Haut-Brion dates back to 1525, when Jean de Pontac gradually established the estate. In the following centuries, Haut-Brion gained a remarkable reputation, particularly in England, where it became one of the first Bordeaux wines to be identified by the name of its estate.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Haut-Brion holds a unique place in this hierarchy: it is the only First Growth located outside the Médoc. This distinction confirms its historical prestige, the consistency of its wines and its founding role in the history of Bordeaux’s great growths.

Today, Château Haut-Brion belongs to Domaine Clarence Dillon, chaired by Prince Robert of Luxembourg. Technical direction is led by Jean-Philippe Delmas, continuing the work of a family closely linked to the modern history of the estate. This governance combines heritage, technical precision and deep respect for the Haut-Brion style.

A First Growth outside the Médoc

Château Haut-Brion stands apart from the other First Growths through its location in Pessac-Léognan, in the historic Graves region. This geographical singularity gives the wine a personality very different from the great Pauillac or Margaux wines: more earthy, more smoky, more spicy, with a marked mineral depth.

Haut-Brion does not impress solely through power or concentration. Its greatness lies in the balance between intensity and restraint, between richness of texture and freshness, between aromatic complexity and precision. It is a wine of depth, silence and length.

Terroir: the deep gravel soils of Pessac-Léognan

The vineyard of Château Haut-Brion lies on deep gravel ridges, mixed depending on the sector with clay, sand and limestone. These poor, warm and perfectly drained soils encourage regular ripening of the grapes while preserving freshness and natural tension in the wines.

This gently undulating terroir allows the estate to produce both red wines of great depth and white wines of rare intensity. The gravel gives the red wine its structure, smoky dimension and length, while the white parcels offer a tense, floral and crystalline expression.

Terroir expression: Pessac-Léognan, deep gravel soils, clay, sand, limestone, natural drainage, graphite, noble smoke, blond tobacco, cassis, cedar and mineral freshness.

Haut-Brion signature: depth, refinement, velvety texture, smoky complexity, precision, balance and exceptional longevity.

Grape varieties and vineyard precision

The red vineyard of Haut-Brion is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. This diversity gives the wine its depth, texture, structure and aromatic complexity.

Merlot contributes flesh, roundness and suppleness to the palate, while Cabernet Sauvignon brings backbone, freshness and ageing capacity. Cabernet Franc reinforces aromatic precision, floral notes and overall finesse.

The estate’s white wines, produced in very small quantities, mainly combine Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. They rank among the greatest dry white wines of Bordeaux, prized for their intensity, tension, depth and rarity.

Viticulture, vinification and exacting precision

Work in the vineyard is based on careful observation of each parcel, rigorous grape selection and constant adaptation to the conditions of each vintage. Harvesting is conducted with precision in order to preserve the balance between ripeness, freshness and aromatic purity.

Vinification is carried out with great attention to parcel origin, ripeness and the structure of each lot. The objective is not to produce a massive wine, but to reveal the natural depth of the terroir, the velvety texture and the aromatic complexity that define Haut-Brion.

Ageing supports this search for balance. It refines the tannins, structures the wine and allows it gradually to develop depth, without masking the estate’s smoky, spicy and mineral signature.

Estate profile

Structure: profound, velvety, precise, fresh and built for long ageing.

Aromatic expression: cassis, black fruit, blond tobacco, graphite, cedar, noble smoke, fine spices, leather and mineral notes.

Texture: silky and enveloping, with refined tannic depth and a long finish.

Personality: a historic great wine of the Graves, complex, smoky, refined and deeply elegant, whose greatness is fully revealed with time.

Style of the wines

The style of Château Haut-Brion red is defined by a very distinctive aromatic depth. The wine often expresses notes of cassis, black fruit, blond tobacco, cedar, graphite, spices, noble smoke and warm earth, with a velvety, ample and remarkably balanced palate.

With time, great bottles develop nuances of fine leather, truffle, undergrowth, cigar box, incense and softened spices. Haut-Brion’s strength lies in its ability to unite restrained power, suppleness, complexity and persistent freshness.

Château Haut-Brion Blanc offers a rare and intense expression of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Its palate combines breadth, tension, floral notes, citrus, white fruit, wax, warm stone and remarkable mineral depth.

Emblematic cuvées

Château Haut-Brion Rouge: a First Growth and the most complete expression of the estate. It combines depth, velvety texture, smoky complexity, noble tannins and remarkable longevity.

Château Haut-Brion Blanc: one of Bordeaux’s greatest dry white wines, produced in very small quantities. It stands out for its tension, richness, mineral depth and great ageing capacity.

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion: the château’s second red wine, elegant, deep and faithful to the estate’s signature, with a more accessible expression in its youth.

La Clarté de Haut-Brion: the second white wine, sourced from the terroirs of Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion, offering a luminous, tense and refined expression of great Pessac-Léognan whites.

Great vintages and longevity

Château Haut-Brion belongs to the great wines capable of evolving for several decades. The finest years combine depth, freshness, velvety texture, aromatic complexity and balance. The reds gain smoky, truffled and spicy nuances over time, while the whites develop remarkable mineral and honeyed complexity.

Among the most sought-after historical and modern vintages are 1928, 1945, 1955, 1961, 1989, 1990, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Depending on storage conditions, the greatest bottles can achieve exceptional longevity while retaining the estate’s refined signature.
