Sempé Armagnac Vintage 1973 — 70 cl with OWC
This Sempé Armagnac Vintage 1973, presented in 70 cl with its original wooden case, belongs to the great tradition of vintage Armagnacs. Unlike age-statement blends, a vintage Armagnac expresses a single year of distillation: it therefore carries the memory of one precise harvest, with its own character, evolution and aromatic patina.
Distilled in 1973 and bottled at 45.4% vol., this Sempé Armagnac offers a mature, deep and warm expression, marked by candied fruits, sweet spices, noble oak, roasted notes and a round, ample and persistent texture. A bottle with both patrimonial and gastronomic appeal, ideal as a birth-year gift, a contemplative tasting bottle or part of a collection of fine French spirits.
Maison Sempé: perfume, roundness and length
Founded in 1934 by Abel Sempé, Maison Sempé is one of the historic names of Armagnac. The house was built around a simple yet demanding idea: to select eaux-de-vie capable of expressing the generosity, depth and elegance of the Gascon spirit.
The Sempé vintage collection is based on a careful selection of casks, guided by the founder’s signature trilogy: perfume, roundness and length. The 1973 vintage fully reflects this approach, with an evolved, harmonious and intensely aromatic profile.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep amber with mahogany and copper reflections, bright and intense, showing a beautiful visual patina that reflects long ageing in oak.
Nose: rich, evolved and enveloping, with dried apricot, fig, prune, candied orange, currant, brown caramel, cocoa, walnut, blond tobacco, fine leather, soft vanilla and warm spices. With aeration, nuances of coffee, polished wood, delicate rancio and toasted dried fruits may appear.
Palate: ample, round and warm, with a velvety texture, fine aromatic intensity and a long, spicy and lightly roasted finish. The alcohol is present yet well integrated, supported by the richness of candied fruit, melted oak notes and an elegant persistence.
Expression of the 1973 vintage
The 1973 vintage now offers a fully mature expression, more focused on complexity, the softness of dried fruits, spices, noble oak and aromatic depth than on youthful vigour. This is an Armagnac to be served slowly, in a suitable glass, allowing the aromas to open gradually.
The presence of the original wooden case enhances the appeal of this bottle as a collector’s item or birth-year gift. For service, a temperature of around 18 to 20°C will preserve the balance between warmth, roundness and aromatic finesse.
In summary: a Sempé Armagnac Vintage 1973 in 70 cl with OWC, bottled at 45.4% vol., marked by candied fruits, prune, candied orange, sweet spices, cocoa, tobacco, fine leather, noble oak and a long, warm finish.
Food pairings: pan-seared foie gras, duck breast, walnut desserts, tarte Tatin, crème brûlée, dark chocolate, a fine cigar, aged Comté, blue cheese or pure tasting at the end of a meal.
