Located in the far east of Austria, on the Hungarian border, Burgenland benefits from a warm Pannonian and sunny climate, ideal for the full maturation of red grapes. Less known than Lower Austria for its whites, it is nevertheless the Austrian reference for deep red wines and sweet wines of world renown.
Iconic Grape Varieties of Burgenland
Blaufränkisch: noble grape variety of Burgenland, structured, spicy, with remarkable aging potential.
Zweigelt: fruity, juicy, supple, often vinified in a more accessible style.
St. Laurent: rarer, elegant, between Pinot Noir and Syrah.
Welschriesling, Furmint, Chardonnay, Muskateller: for botrytized sweet wines (Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese).
The Major Sub-Regions of Burgenland
1. Neusiedlersee
East side of Lake Neusiedl.
Humid climate in the morning, dry in the afternoon: ideal for botrytis (noble rot).
High place for sweet wines: Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, sometimes Eiswein.
Famous cuvées: Ruster Ausbruch (similar to Tokaji), botrytized Pinot Cuvées.
2. Leithaberg
Limestone and schist soils.
Elegant Blaufränkisch, tense, saline.
Very beautiful whites as well (Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner).
Leithaberg DAC appellation for dry red and white wines of terroir.
3. Mittelburgenland
Nicknamed "Blaufränkischland".
Powerful, rich, structured red wines.
DAC Mittelburgenland only for Blaufränkisch.
4. Eisenberg
All the way south, close to Hungary.
Unique schist terroirs.
Very mineral, fine and complex Blaufränkisch.
Eisenberg DAC in red only.
