Armagnac: A Liquid Treasure from the Heart of Gascog

Armagnac is a prestigious brandy produced primarily in the Gascog region of southwest France. Older than cognac, this traditional spirit benefits from unique know-how and a rich array of flavors that captivate fine spirit enthusiasts. Distilled from grapes grown in the best terroirs, Armagnac entices with its complex aromas and authentic character.

Characteristics of Armagnac

Armagnac stands out for its unique distillation process, carried out in a column still, which gives it a richer and more intense profile than cognac. Aged in oak barrels, it develops aromas of dried fruits, spices, honey, and woody notes that evolve over time.

The grape varieties used for Armagnac include Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc, Baco, and Colombard, each contributing to the balance of flavors. Armagnac is generally classified by its age:

  • VS (Very Special): Aged for at least 2 years.
  • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): Aged between 4 and 10 years.
  • XO (Extra Old): Aged for 10 years or more.

Types of Armagnac:

  • Hors d'Âge Armagnac: An exceptional Armagnac aged for several decades, offering unparalleled complexity and aromas.
  • Aged Armagnac: It can be aged for 10, 20, or even 30 years, allowing it to develop a rich flavor profile of candied fruits, vanilla, and oak.
  • Vintage Armagnac: Armagnac from a single year of harvest, allowing you to experience the unique characteristics of a particular vintage.

How to Enjoy Armagnac

Armagnac is typically enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or a cognac glass to fully appreciate its aromas. It can also be used in sophisticated cocktails or paired with dishes like aged cheeses, dark chocolate, or dried fruits.
