Why 2009 Stands Out for its Ripe Fruit and Open Charm
The 2009 vintage was a warm, generous year for red Burgundy. A sunny and broadly consistent growing season allowed Pinot Noir to ripen fully, producing healthy, naturally concentrated grapes with supple tannins and expressive fruit. Unlike more austere or tightly wound vintages, 2009 showed its charm early, with a rounder texture and a more immediate sense of pleasure.
This ripeness shaped the character of the wines: deep colour, generous red and black fruit, soft tannins, a broad palate and a lightly spiced finish. The best terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune produced Pinot Noirs that are expressive, generous and approachable, while retaining enough structure to age gracefully in the finest bottles.
More than fifteen years after the harvest, red Burgundy 2009 is entering a very enjoyable stage of maturity. Many wines now show an open, generous and expressive profile, with softer tannins and a developed aromatic character. Grands crus, top premiers crus and leading domaines can still retain real reserve, especially in the Côte de Nuits.
Aromatically, the wines are moving towards black cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, sweet spice, faded peony, forest floor, fine leather and, in some bottles, a subtle truffle note. The vintage is warmer and more immediately accessible than 2005, with a rounder, more generous expression of mature Pinot Noir.
