Insignia 2018 — Joseph Phelps Vineyards
This Insignia 2018 from Joseph Phelps Vineyards, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of Napa Valley’s great iconic cuvées. A prestigious Bordeaux-style blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, Insignia expresses all the depth, richness and elegance of Napa’s great terroirs: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, plum, violet, graphite, cedar, tobacco, cocoa, fine vanilla, sweet spices and a long mineral finish.
Joseph Phelps Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s most respected historic estates, and Insignia has for several decades stood among the benchmark Californian wines inspired by Bordeaux. The 2018 vintage is distinguished by remarkable balance, aromatic purity, perfectly controlled ripeness and the finesse of its tannins. The magnum format further enhances slow evolution, relative freshness and the collector dimension of this sought-after cuvée.
A great Napa Valley wine, deep, polished and luxurious, where the power of black fruit remains perfectly balanced by freshness, precision and refined tannic structure. Insignia 2018 combines cassis, blackberry, blueberry, graphite, cedar, cocoa, tobacco and spices, with a broad, velvety, dense and highly persistent palate. The magnum format reinforces its ageing potential and the nobility of its evolution.
Terroir: Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon and a prestigious blend
Insignia is made from selected parcels across several great sectors of Napa Valley, allowing Joseph Phelps to compose a wine of balance, depth and complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, cassis, graphite and power; the other Bordeaux varieties contribute texture, roundness, spicy nuances and aromatic complexity.
Napa Valley terroir allows generous ripeness, intense black fruits and great textural richness, while the finest parcels preserve freshness, tension and precision. In the 2018 vintage, this combination gives a particularly harmonious wine: bright fruit, fine tannins, integrated ageing, aromatic depth and a long, mineral and spicy finish.
Terroir expression: Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-style blend, cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, violet, graphite, cedar, cocoa, tobacco and mineral freshness.
Joseph Phelps signature: parcel selection, fruit depth, luxurious texture, blending precision, polished tannins, controlled ageing and great ageing capacity.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep purple with garnet and black reflections, dense, bright and still very youthful. In magnum, the colour should preserve its intensity, dark brilliance and depth for a long time, with slower evolution than in a standard bottle.
Nose: deep, ripe and very elegant, with cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, plum, black fruits, violet, graphite, cedar, blond tobacco, cocoa and fine vanilla. With aeration, nuances of liquorice, mocha, sandalwood, coffee, fresh mint, sweet spices, fine leather and warm earth may appear.
Palate: full, velvety, dense and perfectly balanced, with generous yet very precise black fruit. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, graphite, cedar, cocoa, tobacco, mocha and spices unfold with depth, supported by ripe, fine and enveloping tannins. The finish is long, harmonious, mineral and persistent, with an impression of controlled power and great Californian class.
Fruit: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, plum, black fruits, dark berries.
Ageing and spices: cedar, fine vanilla, mocha, cocoa, coffee, sweet spices, sandalwood, blond tobacco.
Terroir and evolution: graphite, violet, liquorice, fresh mint, fine leather, warm earth, polished tannins, mineral freshness.
Overall impression: great Napa Valley wine, deep, refined and luxurious, with pure black fruit, velvety texture and a long mineral finish.
Expression of the 2018 vintage
The 2018 vintage in Napa Valley is recognised for its balance, aromatic purity and tannin quality. The long, even growing season allowed full ripeness without excess, producing wines that are concentrated, fresh and very well defined. In Insignia, this year particularly highlights blending precision, the brightness of black fruit, tannic finesse and palate depth.
Today, this Insignia 2018 in magnum remains young and has excellent ageing potential. It can already impress through its fruit, density and balance after careful aeration, but the large format will allow it to gain further complexity: cedar, tobacco, fine leather, graphite, cocoa, melted spices, forest floor, mint and more tertiary nuances should gradually join the depth of black fruit.
In summary: a deep, elegant and highly harmonious Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018 in magnum, driven by the purity of the vintage, blending precision and the classical grandeur of Napa Valley.
Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, plum, violet, graphite, cedar, tobacco, cocoa, fine vanilla, mocha, liquorice, fine leather and a long mineral finish.
