Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2006 — Domaine Taupenot-Merme

This Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2006 from Domaine Taupenot-Merme expresses one of the great historic terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis, famous for its depth, spicy finesse and ability to produce Pinot Noir of great nobility. In a classical, structured vintage now showing evolution, it offers a complex, refined and profoundly Burgundian wine: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, faded rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, forest floor, fine leather, noble earth, black tea and a long mineral finish.

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is renowned for precise, elegant wines that remain faithful to the terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, with an approach focused on fruit purity, tannic finesse and balance. Clos des Lambrays, an emblematic Grand Cru of Morey-Saint-Denis, is distinguished by an expression that is floral, spicy, earthy and silky. The 2006 vintage brings classical structure, preserved freshness and gradual evolution towards delicate tertiary nuances.

The spirit of the wine

A Clos des Lambrays of great distinction, now based more on complexity, elegance and tertiary depth than on simple fruit power. The 2006 combines evolved red and black fruits, faded flowers, spice, liquorice, forest floor, fine leather, noble earth and minerality, with a silky, fresh, structured and persistent palate. It is a Grand Cru of nuance, memory and noble maturity.

Terroir: Clos des Lambrays, depth and elegance in Morey-Saint-Denis

Clos des Lambrays is one of the major Grands Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, located on a slope where clay-limestone soils, marls and stony elements give Pinot Noir an expression that is both structured and refined. The cru often stands out through a combination of earthy depth, floral perfume, fine spices and mineral length.

In Morey-Saint-Denis, the great terroirs offer a unique balance between the firmness of Gevrey-Chambertin and the sensuality of Chambolle-Musigny. In Clos des Lambrays, this identity translates into a wine of texture, tension and aromatic complexity. At Taupenot-Merme, the 2006 now reveals the character of the cru through notes of evolved cherry, spices, forest floor, fine leather, fresh earth and persistent minerality.

Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Morey-Saint-Denis, Clos des Lambrays, clay, limestone, marl, black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, faded rose, spices, forest floor, noble earth and persistent minerality.

Taupenot-Merme signature: fruit purity, classical elegance, measured extraction, fine tannins, respect for terroir, balance, freshness and long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby evolving towards garnet, with slight brick-toned reflections depending on storage. The colour shows the first noble signs of maturity, while retaining fine luminosity and elegant depth.

Nose: fine, complex and gradually evolved, with black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, deep red fruits, faded rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice and noble earth. With aeration, nuances of forest floor, fine leather, black tea, cocoa, sweet pepper, light truffle, fallen leaves and limestone minerality may appear.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, silky, fresh and still structured, with substance now more melted and harmonious. Flavours of cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, plum, spice, liquorice, forest floor, fine earth and leather unfold with elegance, supported by softened tannins and preserved acidity. The finish is long, mineral, lightly saline and delicately spicy, with an impression of calm depth and great Burgundian nobility.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, deep red fruits, dark berries.

Flowers and spices: faded rose, violet, sweet spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, black tea, deep Morey perfume.

Evolution and terroir: forest floor, noble earth, fine leather, cocoa, light truffle, fallen leaves, limestone minerality, melted tannins.

Overall impression: mature, elegant and complex Grand Cru, with silky texture, preserved freshness and a long mineral finish.

Expression of the 2006 vintage

The 2006 vintage in Burgundy produced red wines that are classical, fresh and structured, often less solar than very rich years, but capable of developing fine aromatic complexity over time. In the great terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, this year is marked by gradual evolution towards notes of forest floor, spice, fine leather, black tea and noble earth.

Today, this Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2006 is entering an interesting phase of maturity, where the freshness of the vintage accompanies tertiary complexity that is already well present. Measured aeration is recommended in order to preserve the balance and delicacy of mature Pinot Noir. With time in the glass, the wine may reveal more truffle, forest floor, melted spices, fine leather, fallen leaves, black tea and mineral nuances.

In summary: an elegant, complex and nobly evolved Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2006, driven by the depth of Morey-Saint-Denis, the classical style of Taupenot-Merme and the structuring freshness of the vintage.

Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, faded rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, forest floor, fine leather, noble earth, black tea, light truffle and a long mineral finish.
