Barbera d’Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2019 — Vietti
The Barbera d’Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2019 from Vietti is one of the great Piedmontese expressions of Barbera. Sourced from the oldest part of the Scarrone vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, it offers an intense, deep and refined interpretation of this often underestimated grape variety.
The 2019 vintage combines ripe fruit, natural freshness and impressive textural depth. Black cherry, blackberry, plum, spice, liquorice, violet and subtle oak notes shape a broad, vibrant and beautifully balanced wine, with a long, savoury finish.
Terroir and winemaking
This cuvée is made from 100% Barbera, sourced from the oldest vines of Scarrone, facing south-east on the slopes of Castiglione Falletto. The naturally low yields of these old vines give the wine concentration, depth and expressive intensity.
Fermentation takes place in open-top tanks, with mechanical punch-downs and pump-overs, followed by post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barriques, before ageing for around 18 months in a combination of stainless steel, barriques and large oak casks, preserving fruit energy while refining the texture.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby, bright, dense and still very sustained.
Nose: intense and generous, with ripe cherry, blackberry, black plum, violet, sweet spices, liquorice and a touch of vanilla. With air, notes of cocoa, dried flowers and fine earth emerge.
Palate: broad, lively and savoury, with full substance, vibrant acidity and a polished texture. The dark fruit remains precise, supported by a long, spicy and balanced finish.

The 2019 vintage and ageing potential
In Piedmont, 2019 is a vintage of great poise, combining ripeness, freshness and structure. In Scarrone Vigna Vecchia, this balance gives a Barbera that is dense but never heavy, with natural energy that carries the palate.
The wine can be enjoyed now after a short aeration, while also offering strong ageing potential. With time, it will develop further notes of cocoa, fine leather, melted spices and undergrowth. Serve at around 16 to 17°C, in large glasses.
Key points: a high-level Barbera d’Alba from Vietti, sourced from the old vines of Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto, rated up to 95 points, combining depth, freshness and great aromatic intensity.
Food pairings: tajarin with ragù, agnolotti del plin, mushroom risotto, braised veal, beef cheek, roast pork chop, truffled poultry, mature Piedmontese cheeses or Italian dishes with reduced sauces.
