Weingut Clemens Busch – The Purest Expression of Mosel Riesling

A visionary biodynamic estate on the steep slopes of the Mosel

In Pünderich, on the dramatic, steep slopes of the Mosel Valley, Clemens, Rita and Johannes Busch craft some of the most vibrant and terroir-transparent Rieslings in Europe. Since the 1980s, the estate has become a leading voice of biodynamic viticulture, producing wines of rare mineral precision that capture the full magic of Germany’s slate landscapes.

A pioneer of biodynamics since 1984, the domaine was built on a simple conviction: Riesling expresses its true soul only when the soil is alive, breathing, and in constant dialogue with the vine.

Certified biodynamic, the estate’s 16 hectares of vertiginous slopes are worked entirely by hand — ploughing, canopy work, treatments, harvesting. Observation, precision, and deep respect for life form the foundation of this demanding philosophy.

The Pündericher Marienburg: a Grand Amphitheatre of Slate

The domaine is almost entirely rooted in the Marienburg, a monumental, uninterrupted south-facing hillside — one of the largest single-vineyard terroirs of the Mosel. Each cuvée reveals a distinct shade of slate:

  • Fahrlay — blue slate: vibrant salinity, restrained power, great depth.
  • Falkenlay — grey slate: balance, elegance, harmonious length.
  • Rothenpfad — red slate: warm mineral energy, structure, intense fruit.
  • Felsterrasse — rocky terraces: radical tension, verticality, pure energy.
  • Raffes — ancient red slate, very old vines: meditative depth, majestic density.

Through this geological lens, Clemens Busch is recognized as one of the greatest interpreters of slate-driven Riesling.

Natural, Patient and Transparent Winemaking

In the cellar, the approach is minimalist and uncompromising — a philosophy of letting the place speak:

  • spontaneous, slow fermentations with indigenous yeasts,
  • long ageing in large, old Mosel foudres,
  • gentle, measured lees contact,
  • minimal sulphur, added only at bottling,
  • no added yeasts or oenological inputs,
  • little or no filtration.

The result: wines that are simultaneously crystalline and deep, where electric mineral tension meets a hauntingly pure aromatic profile.

Wine Style: Energy, Salinity and Exceptional Longevity

The Busch signature relies on a rare combination of:

  • razor-sharp tension
  • tactile salinity
  • linear mineral drive
  • fine, vibrant texture

The dry Rieslings (Trocken & Grosses Gewächs) rank among the Mosel’s longest-lived: 15 to 30 years depending on the vintage. The Kabinett and Spätlese wines — luminous, airy, and finely balanced — represent the purest expression of the off-dry Mosel style.

Iconic Cuvées

  • Riesling Trocken

  • Kabinett & Spätlese Goldkapsel
