Weingut Carl Loewen — The Pure & Luminous Expression of Mosel Riesling

A historic Mosel estate redefined by precision, authenticity and the energy of steep slate vineyards

Located in Leiwen, in the heart of the Mosel, Weingut Carl Loewen stands among the valley’s most essential and expressive Riesling producers. Founded in the early 19th century, the estate has maintained an intimate connection with the steep slate slopes that have shaped the global reputation of Mosel wine.

Since 2015, Christopher Loewen has represented the new generation. Combining deep respect for heritage with contemporary precision, he has elevated the estate to new heights, establishing Loewen as one of the most inspiring interpreters of terroir-driven Riesling. His vision embraces elegance, clarity and authenticity, firmly rooted in Mosel tradition yet resolutely forward-looking.

Terroir & Vineyard

The estate covers about fifteen hectares in Leiwen and Longuich, positioned on the dramatic slopes overlooking the Mosel. These steep vineyards, composed of blue, red and grey slate, store heat during the day and release it slowly at night—a defining feature of the region that enables the slow, steady ripening essential to Mosel Riesling’s crystalline expression.

Among the estate’s jewels is the Laurentiuslay, a Grosse Lage vineyard with a south–southwest exposition that yields wines of depth and intensity. Equally iconic is Maximin Herrenberg, planted in 1896 and one of the very few pre-phylloxera vineyards still in production in Germany. Its century-old vines produce wines of remarkable nobility and complexity.

The precipitous slopes of Ritsch and Thörnicher Ritsch contribute a striking verticality and mineral purity. Many parcels are still trained in the traditional single-post system, requiring intense manual work. The age and deep rooting of these vines form the backbone of the estate’s uniqueness.

Philosophy & Viticultural Practices

Carl Loewen practices a respectful, patient and minimally interventionist viticulture. The vineyards are entirely worked by hand, with a strong focus on soil vitality and environmental balance. Chemical inputs are kept to a strict minimum, while plant diversity and the preservation of ancient vine material play a central role.

Harvesting is done exclusively by hand with rigorous selection. The estate eschews cultured yeasts, ensuring that each wine reflects the distinctive aromatic fingerprint of its slate terroir. Christopher Loewen’s philosophy is clear: wines must express origin, transparency and purity, letting the land speak without technical artifice.

Winemaking & Ageing

The cellar work mirrors this quest for purity. Fermentations are spontaneous, conducted either in neutral tanks or in the estate’s traditional old Mosel foudres. These large, seasoned casks shape texture without imparting oak flavour, allowing the wines to develop naturally on their fine lees over extended periods.

Bottling is done with minimal intervention to preserve the energy and integrity of the wines. Each cuvée reflects the vibrating minerality of slate and the brilliant tension that defines Riesling grown on steep slopes. The style is driven by freshness, lift and precision, far from any pursuit of exaggerated richness.

Style of the Wines

Loewen’s Rieslings are marked by vibrant minerality, natural tension, pure aromatics of white fruits, citrus and delicate flowers, and a mouthwatering depth highlighting the salinity of slate. Their balance between ripeness and freshness gives them a luminous, aerial energy.

Whether dry (Trocken), off-dry (Feinherb) or sweeter in style, the estate’s signature is unmistakable: elegance, finesse, verticality and impressive ageing potential. The wines belong among the most delicate, crystalline and terroir-driven expressions of the Mosel, with a contemporary clarity rooted in authenticity.
