Weingut A. Christmann – Grand Riesling & Pinot Noir from the Heart of the Pfalz
Biodynamic dry wines of precision, minerality and remarkable depth
History & family stewardship
Based in Gimmeldingen in the prestigious Mittelhaardt sector of the Pfalz, Weingut A. Christmann stands among Germany’s reference estates for dry, terroir-driven wines. Founded in the late 18th century, the estate is now led by the 7th generation, Steffen Christmann—a central figure of the VDP—together with his daughter Sophie Christmann. They craft Rieslings and Spätburgunders of purity, focus and remarkable finesse, consistently ranked among the most distinguished wines of the region.
Terroir & vineyard
The estate farms exclusively VDP.Erste Lage and VDP.Grosse Lage vineyards located on the most revered slopes of the Mittelhaardt: Königsbacher Idig (a historic monopole), Meerspinne im Mandelgarten, Langenmorgen, Vogelsang, Ölberg-Hart, and others. The soils mix limestone, sandstone, clay and calcareous sands, with predominantly south and south-east exposures that allow for slow, even ripening. These cool to moderately warm sites yield wines of tension, depth and laser-like minerality.
The estate spans roughly 20 hectares, planted primarily to Riesling (approx. 70%), with the remainder devoted to Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and small holdings of Weissburgunder. Each parcel is farmed and vinified individually to preserve the distinct identity of every site.
Philosophy & biodynamic viticulture
A pioneer in the region, Weingut A. Christmann has practiced organic and biodynamic viticulture for many years. Treatments rely on biodynamic preparations and plant-based solutions, with no herbicides or insecticides, and extensive use of natural cover crops. This approach encourages deep-rooted vines, balanced growth and a vivid expression of the limestone-driven terroirs of the Pfalz.
In the cellar, winemaking is resolutely low-intervention: gentle, long pressings; natural sedimentation; spontaneous fermentations in large foudres or stainless steel; ageing on fine lees; and a strong commitment to crafting bone-dry, terroir-driven wines. The house style privileges purity, salinity and precision over overt power or opulence.
Wine style
Christmann Rieslings offer a crystalline expression of place: aromas of stone fruit (white peach, apricot), citrus and fresh herbs, supported by notes of wet stone, chalk and limestone. The palate is driven by precision, acidity and salinity, with remarkable length and ageing potential, especially in the estate’s Grosse Lage bottlings.
The Spätburgunders show an elegant, finely etched profile: bright red fruit, subtle spice, graphite and a delicate, silky tannin frame. The style is infused rather than extracted, seeking finesse, tension and drinkability without sacrificing depth.
