In the heart of Wiltingen, on the dramatic, steep slopes of the Saar, Weingut Van Volxem stands today as one of Europe’s truly great producers of dry Riesling. Founded on the grounds of a former Roman estate and celebrated since the 19th century as one of Prussia’s grand vineyards, the domaine once graced the finest tables of Europe.

Since 2000, under the visionary leadership of Roman Niewodniczanski, Van Volxem has undergone a remarkable revival: reclaiming historic sites, restoring ancient terraces, and applying a strict, artisanal philosophy that has propelled Saar Riesling back to global prominence.


Terroirs & Geology — The mythical slopes of the Saar

The estate farms some of Germany’s most celebrated and demanding vineyards, several classified as VDP.Grosse Lage:

Complemented by additional historic slopes such as Wawerner Goldberg, Saarburger Rausch and Wiltinger Braunfels.

Soils

An exceptional mosaic of metamorphic stones:

Climate & Topography

Slopes exceeding 60%, cool nights, and south to south-east exposure give the Saar one of Europe’s slowest ripening climates, resulting in stable acidity, crystalline purity and a razor-sharp minerality — the essence of Saar Riesling.

  • spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts;
