Domaine Giuseppe Rinaldi — The Traditional Soul of Barolo

Giuseppe Rinaldi is a legendary name at the heart of Barolo in Piedmont. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate embodies the purest spirit of traditional winemaking in the Langhe hills. Today, it is led by Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi, daughters of the late Giuseppe “Beppe” Rinaldi, who passed away in 2018. A towering figure of Barolo, Beppe Rinaldi defended a philosophy of authenticity, transparency, and terroir expression — making his domaine one of the most revered in Italy.

Rinaldi’s wines reflect an art of balance and patience: total respect for the land, extremely low yields, long aging, and aromatic clarity. Each bottle reveals the noble essence of Nebbiolo — Barolo’s king grape — with honesty, depth, and purity. This is Barolo as it was always meant to be: unadorned, profound, and built to stand the test of time.

Terroirs & Grapes

The estate spans approximately 6 hectares divided among some of Barolo’s most iconic crus:

  • Brunate
  • Le Coste
  • Cannubi San Lorenzo
  • Ravera

These historic slopes, composed of clay-limestone soils with varied exposures, produce wines of remarkable depth, tension, and energy. Farming is entirely manual and follows near-organic principles, without herbicides or synthetic treatments. The goal is to protect soil vitality, microbial life, and the unique character of each parcel — ensuring that terroir, not technology, defines every wine.

Winemaking & Aging

Vinification at Rinaldi remains resolutely traditional. Fermentations are spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, using whole clusters and no temperature control. Long macerations extract tannins and aromatics gently, while the wines age for several years in large, old oak casks (botti).

There is no new oak, no filtration, and no shortcuts. The philosophy is one of patience and purity — resulting in wines with firm structure, vibrant freshness, and remarkable longevity. These are living, evolving wines that reward time and attention.

Signature Wines

  • Barolo Brunate – Le Coste — A legendary cuvée from two historic crus. Deep, structured, and built for long cellaring.
  • Barolo Tre Tine — A blend of Cannubi San Lorenzo, Ravera, and Le Coste. More floral, ethereal, and refined, showcasing Nebbiolo’s graceful side.
  • Barbera d’Alba & Dolcetto d’Alba — Expressive, immediate wines that still reflect the unmistakable Rinaldi style.
  • Langhe Nebbiolo — An elegant, accessible introduction to the estate’s philosophy of purity and precision.

Style & Signature

Giuseppe Rinaldi’s wines are known for their noble austerity in youth and their magnificent evolution over time. Their aromatic spectrum evokes dried rose, cherry, tar, damp earth, and fine spices, framed by firm tannins and a vibrant acidity. The balance of power and restraint defines Rinaldi’s timeless aesthetic.

Profound yet never heavy, intellectual yet sensual — these are wines for contemplation and longevity. With 20 to 30 years of aging potential, they gain complexity, harmony, and depth over decades.

A Pillar of Classical Barolo

Alongside Bartolo Mascarello, Teobaldo Cappellano, and Maria Teresa Mascarello, Giuseppe Rinaldi stands in the pantheon of Barolo’s great traditionalists. His rejection of modernist winemaking, unwavering respect for the land, and fierce independence shaped a philosophy that continues to inspire a new generation of winemakers.

Today, Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi honor that legacy with the same conviction — crafting wines of soul, depth, and unmistakable identity.
