Domaine des Roches Neuves – The Vibrant Purity of Tuffeau by Thierry Germain
Saumur & Saumur-Champigny – Biodynamic precision on the great tuffeau slopes of the Loire
Arriving from Bordeaux in 1991, Thierry Germain found in the Saumur region the place that would shape one of the purest and most inspiring styles in France. By gradually taking over Domaine des Roches Neuves, he imposed a vision rooted in biodynamics, a sensitive observation of the vine, and meticulous craftsmanship on the tuffeau limestone terroirs.
Fully certified organic and biodynamic, the estate today covers around 23 hectares in Saumur and Saumur-Champigny. Under Thierry Germain’s direction, every parcel, every vine, every gesture serves a single aim: to produce wines of rare aromatic transparency, where the energy of the place prevails over winemaking technique.
Terroirs & Philosophy – Tuffeau as a Spine of Limestone
The Germain style is born from a constant dialogue between plant and rock. The tuffeau soils — the soft, chalky limestone emblematic of the Loire — lend the wines a striking verticality, subtle salinity and a uniquely vibrant mineral tension.
Thierry Germain champions a viticulture of precision:
- extremely detailed, parcel-by-parcel understanding,
- deliberately low yields,
- living soils, carefully and sparingly worked,
- daily observation of the vine and its cycles,
- ripeness calibrated to the identity of each site.
This artisanal and almost intuitive approach seeks to express the soul of tuffeau in luminous, straight, vibrating wines.
Winemaking – The Art of Refinement and Restraint
The cellar is the natural extension of the vineyard: no excess, no heaviness, nothing that could overshadow origin.
- fermentations with indigenous yeasts,
- wooden vats, concrete tanks or amphorae depending on the character of each lieu-dit,
- delicate extraction, always favouring finesse and purity,
- precise ageing in large foudres, tronconic vats or amphorae,
- oak that is imperceptible on the palate, never dominant,
- limited sulphur, minimal filtration.
Each wine is shaped with absolute respect for the character of the vintage and the naked truth of its terroir.
Wine Style – Energy, Verticality, Inner Depth
The wines of Domaine des Roches Neuves have an immediately recognisable identity: crystalline freshness, a slender, elongated profile, silky texture, mineral tension and the pure, precise fruit that defines great Loire Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc.
Cabernet Franc
A style that runs counter to massive, heavily extracted expressions: here, everything is about finesse, florality, length and inner intensity. Tannins are powdery, delicate and seamlessly integrated.
Chenin Blanc
Straight, vibrant, saline. A chiselled balance driven by deep minerality and a bright, mouth-watering finish.
Signature Cuvées
- Saumur-Champigny “La Marginale”
A strict parcel selection; vibrant depth and serious ageing potential. - Saumur-Champigny “Les Mémoires”
Century-old vines on tuffeau. Precision, tension and absolute straightness — a flagship wine of the estate. - Saumur Blanc “L’Insolite”
Pure, incisive Chenin; mineral brightness and remarkable tension. - Saumur Blanc “Clos Romans”
A great tuffeau white: luminous density, controlled breadth, long saline finish. - Saumur-Champigny “Terres Chaudes”
A more immediate expression of Cabernet Franc; pure fruit, perfect balance and accessibility. - Bulles de Roches
Delicate sparkling wine; fresh energy and a fine, precise mousse.
