Château Prieuré-Lichine — The Floral Elegance of Margaux
A Classified Growth that blends classic refinement with modern precision.
A Historic Estate in the Heart of Margaux
Château Prieuré-Lichine, a Grand Cru Classé of 1855, spans about 73 hectares in the heart of Margaux. The estate embodies the delicate balance between Bordeaux tradition and modern elegance, producing wines that are both charming and precise. Owned by the Cruse family since 1999, the château is now led by Mathis Lichine, descendant of the legendary Alexis Lichine, known as “The Pope of Wine.” Surrounded by an experienced technical team, he continues the family philosophy: revealing the natural grace of Margaux’s terroirs.
Terroir & Grape Varieties — Deep Günzian Gravels
The vineyard rests on deep Günzian gravel soils with a southwest exposure and a subsoil of clay-limestone that provides both structure and freshness. The varietal composition reflects the typicity of Margaux:
- Cabernet Sauvignon (~50%) — the backbone of the wine
- Merlot (~40%) — suppleness and fruit charm
- Petit Verdot (~8%) — aromatic intensity
- Cabernet Franc (~2%) — finesse and complexity
The high planting density (~8,000 vines/ha) enhances concentration and depth, yielding wines of balance and harmony.
Balanced & Sustainable Viticulture
The estate practices parcel-by-parcel viticulture with selective grass cover, manual harvesting, and meticulous sorting. An active environmental policy preserves biodiversity through hedgerows, flower meadows, ecological corridors and natural soil life management, reinforcing the vitality of the terroir.
Winemaking & Ageing — Precision and Purity
Each plot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with long macerations (3 to 4 weeks) to achieve fine and elegant extraction. Ageing lasts 16 to 18 months, with 50% new oak and the use of large foudres to preserve freshness and balance. The result is wines that are harmonious, refined and expressive of their origin.
Style & Signature Cuvée
Château Prieuré-Lichine (Grand Vin) — deep color, subtle aromas of cassis, blackberry, violet, sweet spices and graphite. The palate is supple yet structured, with silky tannins, saline tension and graceful length. Accessible after 8–10 years, but capable of ageing beautifully for 15 to 25 years in the finest vintages.
