Azienda Agricola Montevetrano — A Cult Wine of Campania

A legendary estate in Campania, Montevetrano produces a world-class red born from volcanic soils and an audacious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Aglianico, and Merlot. A wine of depth, refinement, and southern Italian character.

Summary

Montevetrano, Colli di Salerno IGT — Cabernet Sauvignon • Aglianico • Merlot: a cult red from Campania, combining richness, finesse, and mineral tension. Built to age gracefully.

Personal Notes

Deep and elegant in color, the flagship Montevetrano cuvée blends predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a portion of Aglianico (and occasionally Merlot), resulting in a structured yet polished wine with firm tannins and a long, savory finish. Ideal with roasted game, wild boar stew, or aged cheeses. Best enjoyed from 8–10 years after bottling, with an ageing potential of 15–20 years.

History & Philosophy

The Montevetrano estate was revitalized in the early 1990s by Silvia Imparato, born into a family of winemakers. Located near Salerno, in the hills of San Cipriano Picentino within the Monti Picentini Regional Park, the property spans around 26 hectares and maintains a limited production of approximately 30,000 bottles per year. The goal: to harness the estate’s exceptional terroir through a unique blend of international and native grape varieties, creating one of Southern Italy’s most iconic wines.

Terroir & Vineyard

The vineyards are planted on southwest-facing hillsides near the sea, delivering both marine influence and strong thermal variation. The soils are of medium texture with limestone and ancient fragments (“bone fragments”), offering excellent drainage, temperature moderation, and structural depth — with a notable volcanic energy that shapes the wine’s profile.

Winemaking & Ageing

  • Fermentation in stainless steel tanks, sometimes with cold maceration or saignée depending on the vintage.
  • Ageing in French oak barrels (from Nevers, Allier, Tronçais) for approximately 12 months or longer.
  • Blend varies by year — for example, 2019 included 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico, and 20% Merlot.

Style & Cellaring Potential

A powerful yet refined style: blackcurrants, dark berries, fine spices, and mineral tension, with a long and elegant finish. Ideal for cellaring over 10–20 years, depending on the vintage.

Signature Wines

  • Montevetrano (Colli di Salerno IGT) — the estate’s flagship red blend.
  • Core Bianco (Fiano/Greco) — a white expression from the same estate.
