Domaine des Comtes Lafon — A Legacy of Vision, Precision and Great White Burgundy

An iconic Meursault estate blending heritage with contemporary excellence.
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of Burgundy’s most revered names. While the house and cellars at Clos de la Barre date back to 1869, the domaine’s true foundation began in 1894 when Jules Lafon married Marie Boch, joining two historic vineyard legacies. The purchase of a parcel in Montrachet in 1918/1919 demonstrated early vision and ambition for the region’s greatest terroirs.

In 1984, Dominique Lafon took over, launching a new qualitative era — regaining control of the vineyards, converting to organic farming in 1995 and biodynamics in 1998. Since 2022, Léa Lafon and Pierre Lafon have led the domaine, ensuring a smooth generational transition while remaining true to its identity.

A Prestigious Mosaic of Côte de Beaune Terroirs

The estate spans approximately 15 hectares, across some of the most renowned appellations in Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie, Puligny-Montrachet, and Montrachet itself.

Meursault

  • Clos de la Barre (monopole) — 2.12 ha
  • 1ers Crus: Charmes, Perrières, Genevrières, Goutte d’Or

Volnay

  • 1er Cru Santenots-du-Milieu — approx. 3.8 ha (nearly half the climat), flagship red

Monthélie

  • 1er Cru “Les Duresses”

Puligny-Montrachet

  • 1er Cru “Champ Gain”

Grand Cru

  • Montrachet — tiny holding acquired in 1918/1919, farmed directly since 1991

This remarkable terroir portfolio forms the backbone of the domaine’s signature style.

Biodynamic Precision and Respect for the Vine

The domaine has practiced biodynamics since 1998, on an organic base established in 1995. Vineyard work focuses on soil vitality and vine balance.

  • No herbicides or synthetic treatments
  • Manual plowing and controlled grass cover
  • Balanced pruning adapted to each parcel
  • Hand-harvesting at full ripeness

The goal is to express each climat with clarity and authenticity, preserving freshness and terroir identity.

Vinification and Aging Over Two Winters

Winemaking is parcel-specific and low-intervention, favoring gentle extractions and natural fermentations.

  • Aging: 18 to 22 months in oak barrels
  • New oak: typically around 30% for Premiers and Grands Crus, lower for village wines
  • Minimal racking and no unnecessary manipulation

This patient approach enhances precision, texture, and depth, allowing each terroir to speak for itself.

Wine Style

The white wines of Comtes Lafon are celebrated for their generous texture, mineral precision, and outstanding aging capacity. They combine ripe orchard fruit and white flowers with a vibrant, saline backbone.

The red wines, long underestimated, have gained remarkable refinement — pure fruit, silky tannins, and increasing precision in recent vintages.

Signature Cuvées

  • Meursault Clos de la Barre — finesse and crystalline definition
  • Meursault 1ers Crus Charmes & Genevrières — floral, rounded, charming
  • Meursault 1er Cru Perrières — vertical, saline, built to age
  • Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-du-Milieu — structured, elegant, a benchmark Volnay
  • Montrachet Grand Cru — majestic and ultra-rare

Legacy and Vision

Today, Domaine des Comtes Lafon stands as one of the great benchmarks of white Burgundy. Its evolution since the 1980s reflects a perfect harmony between family heritage, biodynamic rigor and forward-looking vision. Under Léa Lafon’s leadership, the domaine continues to embody Meursault’s timeless elegance while meeting the environmental and climatic challenges of the future.
