Domaine des Comtes Lafon — The Timeless Greatness of Meursault

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of the most prestigious names in white Burgundy and remains an absolute benchmark in Meursault. Its history is rooted in the Clos de la Barre, where the Boch family built the house and cellars in 1869, before the marriage of Jules Lafon and Marie Boch in 1894 marked the true birth of the modern domaine.

Visionary in spirit, Jules Lafon consolidated an exceptional vineyard heritage, notably through the acquisition of a parcel in Montrachet in 1918/1919. From 1984, Dominique Lafon opened a new qualitative era: regaining control of the vineyards, converting to organic farming in 1995, then to biodynamics in 1998. Since 2022, Léa Lafon and Pierre Lafon have ensured family continuity with precision and exacting standards.

The spirit of the estate

A mythical Meursault estate where Chardonnay reaches a rare expression of depth, texture and mineral precision. Comtes Lafon combines family heritage, biodynamic viticulture, parcel-by-parcel vinification and patient ageing to produce some of Burgundy’s most sought-after white wines, alongside increasingly refined Volnay reds.

Terroir: Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie and the great climats of the Côte de Beaune

The domaine cultivates around 16.3 hectares of vines across several major villages of the Côte de Beaune, including Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie and Chassagne-Montrachet. This exceptional vineyard heritage offers a complete reading of the great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir terroirs of southern Burgundy.

In Meursault, the whites express the textural richness, salinity and limestone energy that define the village’s finest climats. In Volnay, the reds reveal floral finesse, satiny structure and often underestimated depth. The domaine stands out for its ability to combine density, aromatic brilliance, natural balance and great ageing capacity.

Terroir expression: Meursault, Côte de Beaune, limestone, marl, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, white fruits, flowers, hazelnut, salinity, mineral tension and broad texture.

Comtes Lafon signature: depth, purity, biodynamics, long ageing, parcel precision, noble texture, saline freshness and very strong ageing potential.

Biodynamic viticulture and living-soil precision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon has been farmed biodynamically since 1998, on an organic foundation established in 1995. Vineyard work aims to strengthen soil vitality, the natural balance of the vines and the capacity of each climat to express itself clearly.

Practices are based on soil cultivation, the absence of herbicides, constant attention to ripeness and manual harvesting. This approach requires precision and patience, but it makes it possible to obtain grapes of high sanitary quality, carrying freshness, concentration and mineral transparency.

Aromatic profile

Whites: pear, ripe apple, preserved lemon, white peach, white flowers, fresh almond, fine hazelnut and discreet butter.

Mineral expression: chalk, wet stone, salinity, limestone energy, vertical tension and persistent finish.

Reds: red cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, peony, fine spices, fresh earth, satiny tannins and delicate forest floor.

Overall impression: deep, textured and precise wines, combining natural richness, saline freshness, clear expression of climats and remarkable longevity.

Vinification and ageing over two winters

Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, with measured intervention. The domaine favours natural fermentations, limited handling and a constant search for balance between density, freshness and aromatic precision.

Vinification: parcel-based approach, natural fermentations, gentle extraction for reds and precise pressing for whites.

Ageing: around 18 to 22 months in oak barrels, over two winters, depending on cuvée and vintage.

New oak: generally measured, often around 30% for Premier and Grand Crus, lower for village wines.

Philosophy: let each terroir speak without make-up, preserving texture, depth and mineral energy.

Wine style

The white wines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon are renowned for their generous texture, mineral depth and exceptional ability to age. They combine ripe fruits, white flowers, hazelnut, salinity and limestone tension, with a broad palate held together by great freshness.

The red wines, long more discreet in the domaine’s reputation, have gained in precision and refinement. The Volnay wines, especially Santenots-du-Milieu, combine fruit purity, fine tannins, elegant structure and depth for ageing.
