Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay

Volnay & Pommard – The purest expression of Burgundian finesse

Heir to nearly four centuries of family history, Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay embodies one of the most refined, discreet and essential expressions of Burgundian Pinot Noir. Nestled in the heart of Volnay, it belongs to that rare circle of domaines with no theatrics, whose sole ambition is to reveal the finest essence of their climats.

Under the direction of Thierry Glantenay, the domaine covers some 8 hectares across Volnay, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet and a selection of regional parcels. Each wine reflects deep craftsmanship, rare parcel-by-parcel precision and an unwavering pursuit of balance.

History & Family – Four centuries of continuity

The Glantenay family has cultivated the Volnay slopes since the 17ᵗʰ century, preserving an intact heritage shaped by time. This deep connection to place defines the domaine’s style: delicacy, humility, precision and authenticity. Thierry continues this legacy with rigorous clarity and a focus on grace and purity.

The Vineyard – A rare mosaic across Volnay & Pommard

Surface: ~8 hectares
Villages: Volnay, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet, Côte de Beaune

Key Climats:

  • Volnay & Volnay Premier Cru – finesse, floral nuance, silk-like tannins.
  • Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots – the domaine’s flagship of pure elegance.
  • Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards – vibrant, structured yet aerial.
  • Pommard – noble structure interpreted with great refinement.
  • Puligny-Montrachet – rare micro-parcels of crystalline Chardonnay.
  • Bourgogne Pinot Noir & Chardonnay – exemplary finesse and purity.

The light, stony, limestone-rich soils produce wines of remarkable finesse, floral lift and airy elegance — Volnay's signature elevated here without artifice.

Viticulture – Respect, precision, restraint

The domaine follows a respectful viticulture, close to organic practice:

  • mechanical soil work,
  • no herbicides whatsoever,
  • 100% manual harvesting,
  • rigorous parcel selection,
  • carefully managed yields.

The goal: to let Pinot Noir express the vintage’s purity and the terroir’s subtlety.

Winemaking – Purity, gentleness, minimal intervention

Vinification is fully parcel-based, designed to preserve fruit delicacy:

  • mostly full destemming,
  • gentle macerations, minimal extraction,
  • slow fermentations in traditional tanks,
  • subtle oak influence with limited new barrels,
  • rare racking,
  • bottling that respects the wine’s integrity.

The Glantenay style avoids excess: no forceful extraction, no overt oak — just a clear, transparent reading of the terroir.

Style – The quintessence of Volnay: finesse, floral lift, purity

The wines are sought after for their natural elegance:

On the nose:

  • rose, violet, peony,
  • fresh cherry, raspberry,
  • wet stone, subtle spice.

On the palate:

  • silky, almost diaphanous texture,
  • fine, polished tannins,
  • mineral tension,
  • long, airy, refined finishes.
