MAISON RUINART — REIMS

The first Champagne house (1729) & the luminous expression of Chardonnay

Founded in 1729 by Nicolas Ruinart, Maison Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house still in operation. Established in Reims since the 18th century, it embodies a singular vision in which purity, finesse, and the radiance of Chardonnay form the cornerstone of a style now recognised worldwide. Under the guidance of cellar master Frédéric Panaïotis, the house continues its pursuit of precision and elegance, preserving the heritage initiated by Dom Thierry Ruinart, the spiritual figure behind the family.

Terroirs & Crayères: The Architecture of Time

Ruinart sources its grapes from some of Champagne’s most qualitative terroirs, with a particular emphasis on Chardonnay from:

  • Côte des Blancs — chalk-driven tension and purity,
  • Montagne de Reims — floral finesse and aromatic precision,
  • Vallée de la Marne — delicacy, suppleness and fruit-forward charm.

All wines are aged in Ruinart’s historic crayères in Reims — UNESCO World Heritage chalk cellars that offer total darkness, constant cool temperatures, and perfect silence. This slow maturation sculpts the silky texture and aromatic depth that define the Ruinart style.

Philosophy & Winemaking

Ruinart expresses a vision centred on luminosity and purity. Its approach is guided by several fundamental technical choices:

  • a clear primacy of Chardonnay, the house’s iconic grape,
  • precise, minimally interventionist winemaking,
  • assemblages built around freshness and verticality,
  • moderate dosage to preserve clarity,
  • extended ageing in crayères to develop a fine, elegant mousse.

The result is an aesthetic of balance and delicacy, never at the expense of depth.

Wine Style

  • floral and citrus-driven aromatics,
  • linear mineral tension from chalk soils,
  • silky, refined and harmonious texture,
  • fine, airy and consistent bubbles,
  • subtle length carried by Chardonnay purity,
  • a luminous, elegant, contemporary style.
