Château de Fieuzal — A bastion of finesse between Graves and tradition
Located south of Bordeaux, in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château de Fieuzal is a historic estate established in the 18th century and classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves since 1953. Now owned by the Quinn family, it upholds a modern yet respectful vision of Bordeaux heritage: elegant, precise wines where the terroir speaks with depth and clarity.
Terroir & grape varieties
The estate covers about 75 hectares (approximately 65 ha under red vines and 10 ha under white). It is planted on deep gravelly rises mixed with sand, quartz and clay — ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The more clay-rich areas host Merlot, adding roundness and suppleness to the wines.
Approximate varietal breakdown
- Red: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc, 2.5% Petit Verdot
- White: 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sémillon
These free-draining soils, combined with nearby forests and cooling breezes, create ideal conditions for wines that are both refined and structured.
Viticulture & philosophy
The vineyard is managed with a sustainable and parcel-driven approach, with detailed observation of each block based on soil, exposure and vine age. Partial cover crops, careful soil management and a commitment to biodiversity illustrate the balance between nature and production. Harvesting is done by hand in multiple passes to ensure perfect ripeness, and each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its identity.
Vinification & ageing
- Gravity-fed vinification in wood, concrete and stainless steel vats depending on the lot.
- Extended maceration of 3 to 4 weeks for gentle extraction.
- Ageing for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which ~50% are new.
This thoughtful élevage reveals the terroir without overshadowing it: wines that are dense yet lifted, with a distinctive saline finish.
Signature wines
Red
- Château de Fieuzal Rouge — the estate’s grand vin: expressive and structured, with notes of black fruit, violet, graphite and sweet tobacco. Fine tannins, velvety texture, long finish.
- L’Abeille de Fieuzal Rouge — the second wine, more approachable in its youth: supple, fruit-forward, fresh.
White
- Château de Fieuzal Blanc — a Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend: precise, vibrant, with citrus and floral notes, subtle minerality, and noble length.
