Gigondas — Powerful and Aromatic Wines from the Southern Rhône

Gigondas is an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley, at the heart of the Southern Côtes du Rhône. Known for its powerful and aromatic red wines, the appellation enjoys an exceptional terroir nestled between the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains and the surrounding valleys.

Gigondas wines are mainly made from Grenache, often blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and occasionally Counoise. This diversity of grape varieties allows winemakers to craft wines with remarkable complexity and aromatic richness.

Wine Style

Gigondas red wines are celebrated for their intensity, structure, and depth. They reveal aromas of black fruits — blackberry, blackcurrant, plum — interwoven with spicy notes, hints of garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary), and licorice.

On the palate, they are full-bodied and expressive, with firm tannins, a long finish, and impressive balance. The best vintages age beautifully for 10 to 20 years — and sometimes longer in exceptional years — evolving toward notes of dried fruit, spice, and leather.

Though rare, white Gigondas wines are also produced from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Marsanne. They are distinguished by their freshness, floral elegance, and citrus notes.

Terroir & Climate

Gigondas enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The cool, dry Mistral wind sweeps through the valley, protecting the vines from disease and preserving the purity of the fruit.

The terroir is diverse — clay-limestone soils, stony or gravelly terrain — and the Dentelles de Montmirail provide natural shelter and optimal sun exposure. Their steep, well-drained slopes contribute to the concentration and freshness characteristic of the best Gigondas wines.

Aging Potential

Gigondas wines are built to age gracefully. Over time, their fresh fruit aromas evolve into notes of ripe black fruit, prune, spice, and leather. Tannins soften, and the texture becomes silkier and more harmonious. Well-stored bottles can reach exceptional complexity after 15 to 20 years.
